Board of Library Trustees Meeting 9/23/09

Good DC residents, friends, and library advocates:

The mayoral-appointed "independent" Board of Library Trustees is meeting
next Wednesday evening.

DC's Board of Library Trustees (BoLT) is supposed to have immediate
oversight of DCPL's activities and to guide and even scrutinize
decisions made by the Chief Librarian.

More info about the BoLT is here >> http://www.tinyurl.com/dcpl-bolt

You will have a chance to speak up... as there is a public comment
period towards the end of the BoLT's business meeting next Wednesday.

Please be there to experience the newly renovated Takoma Park library,
and to ask your important questions of the Board and Chief Librarian.

The District Dynamos encourage you to be there to perhaps ponder out
loud with us why DCPL and the Board of Trustees don't have and never had
a comprehensive library buildings/services needs assessment and spending
plan in place before taking on the massive city-wide effort to tear down
libraries and rebuild pricey new ones.  The public has been asking to be
involved in a comprehensive library plan for years now.

Without a plan, the public is placed at the whim of opaque department
heads, like the Chief Librarian and even the Mayor himself, who make
most of their decisions behind closed doors -- this insular approach has
really perturbed many DC residents concerned about their neighborhood
libraries and even our central King Memorial Library.

The Dynamos are quite disappointed that DCPL's quite expensive new
libraries, being built around the city, will sit empty for more hours
(closed on Sundays - open late only two nights a week).  Plus, DCPL
recently closed two library buildings, albeit they were small kiosks
(Langston & RL Christian), against the wishes of library users and even
against Councilmember Harry Thomas, Chair of the Libraries Committee >>

Because there was no spending plan in place and very little public
oversight, DCPL is costing DC taxpayers double, per square foot, for
it's new libraries compared to our regional neighbors in Maryland and
Virginia who are also building libraries.

On Monday, Chief Librarian Cooper spoke to the Washington Times about
cutting library service hours, see the article and videos here >>

While Chief Cooper is looking to cut staff, other major cities, like New
York, are expanding hours >>

* Speak your mind at the next Board of Library Trustees meeting.  Next
Wednesday evening.
