| Dear Phillip, Rock the Vote is launching a new voter registration tool! Last year, you were part of the largest young voter registration drive in history. We hope that you will continue to be an active partner and provide this new and improved registration tool to your members, volunteers, readers, viewers, listeners, activists, students, friends . . . whoever is part of your community. In less than five minutes, you can have a button on your website, blog, Facebook, or MySpace profile and start registering voters. (If you are still using the old tool, you'll want to replace it with this one.) We only have a couple more weeks to register voters before the 2009 elections, so here's what you need to do:
The Rock the Vote tool is the simplest and most effective online voter registration tool available. What's new and great?
This is just phase one. After the 2009 elections, we'll go back under the hood to add even more features, so we will be in touch about your experiences with the tool and enhancements you would like to see. Questions? Please send an email to voterregisteration@rockthevote.com or contact Thomas Bates at 206-409-1697. We are really looking forward to working with you. Heather P.S. Rock the Vote has also developed a comprehensive Election Center for the 2009 elections. It is a great resource, so please use it and spread it around: http://www.rockthevote.com/election-center. |

| Friday, September 18 , 2009 Headlines - Key victory for Senator Collins' effort to lift federal truck weight limits in Maine - Senators express concern with number of 'czars' in Administration - Passamaquoddy folk singers perform for Senator Collins - Senators Collins, Cardin introduce ethanol fuel blends legislation - Senator Collins announces $9.2 million for Portland Jetport - $323,565 in National Emergency Grant Funding for Newpage workers Key victory for Senator Collins' effort to lift Federal truck weight limits in Maine Full Senate approves Senator Collins' one-year pilot project "Allowing heavy trucks to stay on federal interstate highways in Maine has always been one of my top priorities," said Senator Collins. "A uniform truck weight limit would keep trucks on the interstates where they belong, rather than on the secondary roads that pass through our small towns and villages. A one-year pilot project allowing heavier trucks on the interstates would permit an assessment of the impact of the safety, commerce and road wear and tear. I believe the result will be improvements in safety, decreases in energy use and emissions, and economic benefits. "It took a great deal of work to convince my colleagues to approve this pilot and I am delighted to have won Senate passage," said Senator Collins. Senators express concern with number of 'czars' in Administration Senators urge President to refrain from creating additional czars without consulting Congress In a letter to the President, Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, questions the number of "czars" within the Executive Office. In the letter, Senator Collins expresses concern that the growing number of czars may be undermining the constitutional oversight responsibilities of Congress. The letter was also signed by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Kit Bond (R-MO), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Bob Bennett (R-UT). Passamaquoddy folk singers perform for Senator Collins Wayne Newell and Blanch Sockabasin in Washington to perform at Library of Congress U.S. Senator Susan Collins met with Maine Passamaquoddy performers Wayne Newell and Blanch Sockabasin in her Washington, D.C. office. Newell and Sockabasin performed a number of traditional Passamaquoddy songs for Senator Collins. Both performers are Passamaquoddy elders, Newell is from Pleasant Point and Sockabasin is from Princeton. Newell and Sockabasin were in Washington, D.C. to perform at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. ![]() Photo (L to R) Wayne Newell, Senator Collins, Blanch Sockabasin, and Donald Soctomah, representative of the tribe. Senators Collins, Cardin introduce ethanol fuel blends legislation Bill would require study before introduction of new gasoline/ethanol blend Senator Collins and U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) introduced legislation designed to ensure that new gasoline fuel mixtures introduced into the marketplace are compatible with gasoline-fueled engines already in widespread use. The legislation comes as a result of the difficulties experienced by users following the initial introduction of blends of gasoline with higher concentrations of ethanol. Blends of gasoline with higher concentrations of ethanol burn hotter than other blends of gasoline, and small devices (grass trimmers, chainsaws, etc.) using these fuels have unexpectedly shifted into gear putting their operators at risk of personal injury. Additionally, fiberglass tanks designed to handle gasoline have suffered from early failure as a result of exposure to the more corrosive ethanol blends. These problems were encountered with "E10," a blend of 10 percent fuel ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. Recently EPA was petitioned to permit E15, a fuel with 15 percent ethanol, into the market and many are concerned that this new fuel blend has not been sufficiently tested. Senator Collins announces $9.2 million for Portland Jetport Funding will be used for new explosive detection system U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, announced that the Department of Homeland Security has awarded a $9.2 million grant to the Portland International Jetport. The funding is intended to be used for a new, checked baggage explosive detection system. This grant funding is bolstered by funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (AARA) which Senator Collins, along with a bipartisan group of Senators, helped craft and was signed into law earlier this year. "This funding will help ensure that state-of-the-art technology is employed to boost security for passengers traveling through Maine's largest airport," said Senator Collins. "In addition to improved security, this infusion of stimulus funding will also help provide additional economic opportunities in Maine." $323,565 in National Emergency Grant Funding for Newpage workers U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe and U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a National Emergency Grant (NEG) in the amount of $325,565 for the displaced workers at NewPage Corporation's Rumford Mill. These NEG funds will benefit the workers who lost their jobs at NewPage as a result of increased competition from overseas. This grant funding is bolstered by funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which Senators Snowe and Collins, as part of a bipartisan group of Senators, helped craft earlier this year. "This National Emergency Grant will help the displaced workers acquire the employment services and assistance they need to rejoin the workforce," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "In these challenging economic times, it is vital that citizens facing unemployment receive adequate training assistance in growing industries in order to navigate the difficult job market. Unemployment assistance was one of our top priorities when crafting the economic stimulus package and we will continue to support workers in our state who are adversely affected by the economic downturn." NEG funds are provided to states, at the discretion of the Secretary of Labor, to provide services such as job training and retraining and job placement services to displaced workers. | For months, special interests and their Republican allies have been smearing health insurance reform to try to defeat it. Enough! As President Obama said last week, "I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it... If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out." So we're starting a new campaign called "Call 'em out!" When a Republican official violates the public trust by lying about reform, we'll be right there to expose the lies and hold them accountable. First up? Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who has claimed that health reform will lead to death panels -- a claim so thoroughly debunked that even former Republican Congressman and conservative pundit Joe Scarborough spoke out about Pawlenty's false claims. Now it's time for us to call him out. Get started at the new "Call 'em out!" action center. Set the record straight about Pawlenty's lies by calling him out on Facebook or Twitter. Expose his shameful tactics to his constituents in Minnesota by funding our ad campaign. Call and tell him to stop lying about health insurance reform and playing politics with the nation's well-being. And spread the word about his false statements and extreme views by sharing our web ad with friends and family. If health reform is only a political equation to some GOP politicians, it's time to change the equation. Every Republican official must understand: If you lie about reform, the American people will call you out! | On Wednesday night President Obama delivered a passionate address on health reform to Congress and all Americans, then immediately wrote to you to ask for your help in making reform a reality. Your response was astounding: In less than 48 hours, more than 450,000 of you signed messages urging Congress to pass the President's plan -- and even chipped in more than $1 million to power our campaign for change. Now, President Obama has recorded a message just for OFA supporters about what comes next. Please watch the video, and, if you haven't already, add your name in support of the President's plan. Thanks, Mitch P.S. In case you missed it, here's the President's email to OFA supporters from the night of the big speech: ---Original Message--- From: President Barack Obama Subject: Not the first, but the last Friend -- I just finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint session of Congress. Now, I'm writing directly to you because what happens next is critical -- and I need your help. Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows where I stand. Now they need to hear from you. Add your voice: Ask your representatives to support my plan for real health reform in 2009. The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and security to Americans who already have health insurance, guarantee affordable coverage for those who don't, and rein in the cost of health care. Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to create a plan that's bold, practical, and represents the broad consensus of the American people. We've come closer to real health reform in the last few months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who profit from the status quo -- and those who put partisan advantage above all else -- will fight us every inch of the way. We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the path. Your voice, right now, is essential. See my full plan and call on your representatives to support it: http://my.barackobama.com/ReformVideo Ours is not the first generation to understand the dire need for health reform. And I am not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last. | Friday, September 11 , 2009 Eight years ago today, our nation experienced one of its darkest days and finest hours. With shocking suddenness, an act of unparalleled cruelty transformed a late-summer morning of uncommon brilliance into one of unimagined horror. On that awful morning, September 11th was transformed from a mere point on the calendar into an eternal monument to the deepest human emotions of loss, of sacrifice, and of resolve. Today, we pause to remember those whose lives were taken that terrible morning. The loss we relive this day reminds us of the value of all that we must protect and the heroism reminds us of the unconquerable spirit of the American people. -Senator Susan Collins Headlines - Senator Collins's statement on the President's Health Care address - Video: Senator Collins discusses health care reform on CNBC - Lieberman, Collins introduce legislation to protect against biological and WMD attacks - Senator Collins at Caribou's 150th celebration - Funding for Maine Police Departments - $59 million for Maine Defense programs - Weekly Column- September 11: A Nation Transformed Senator Collins' statement on the President's health care address Senator Collins released this statement following the President's address to Congress. "The problem of providing affordable access to quality health care for all Americans is one of the most significant domestic challenges facing our country. It affects every American and one-sixth of our economy. "I continue to believe that addressing growing health care costs must be at the center of any health care reform legislation. The high cost is the major barrier to coverage for the uninsured and the reason why so many small businesses and middle-income families are struggling with the escalating cost of health insurance. Soaring costs also are a major burden for the federal and state budgets. The Weapons of Mass Destruction Prevention and Preparedness Act of 2009 responds to a statement by the Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell in December 2008 and the findings of a Congressionally-mandated WMD commission that a WMD terrorist attack is more likely than not to occur by 2013 and that a biological attack is more likely than a nuclear attack. "This Department of Justice funding will help our hardworking law enforcement officers get the essential equipment and key resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively," said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "Funding provided through the JAG program is critical to communities across the nation and in Maine and continues to provide vital support for law enforcement activities that serve to safeguard our communities." Weekly Column- September 11th :A Nation Transformed Weekly column by Senator Susan Collins Our nation today marks the eighth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country. Some of us acknowledge the solemn occasion by gathering with family members, friends or neighbors. Others offer silent prayers. No matter how we observe the day, we take time to remember and to reflect. The attacks against America united us in a profound way. Eight years later, as we mourn those who were viciously murdered at the hands of terrorists, it is appropriate to take stock of where our nation's security stands now. It is critical for us to acknowledge our security successes and to highlight emerging threats that still must be addressed. Stay up to date with Senator Collins at Collins.Senate.Gov |

My Friend,
After a month of hosting and attending town hall meetings with my constituents in Arizona and around the country, I know that Americans want health care reform. But what is so very clear to me is that Americans want to reform health care in the right way. I am more convinced than ever that we must fix what is wrong with our health care system while doing no harm to the parts that work well. This means we need to have malpractice reform, we must emphasize wellness and fitness, give people the option to get the health insurance of their choice and bring the cost of health care under control. If you agree, that we need to reform health care reform the right way, then I ask you to sign my health care reform petition today by following this link. I am very troubled by the potential cost of the President's outlined plans. I know that you are very concerned with the national debt and a projected $9 trillion deficit. The prospective cost of the President's plan could reach $2 trillion, and frankly, our country simply cannot afford this price tag. I will not support heath care reform that adds to the out-of-control spending spree the Democrats in Congress have gone on this year. And I ask you to join me in rejecting the addition of $2 trillion of debt by signing this petition right away. Government-run health care is something we simply cannot afford, and I know that the majority of Americans agree with me that it is not the quality of health care that needs reforming, but the cost. But, I need to know you stand with me. Will you follow this link to sign my petition? As you know, the Democrats in Washington are doing everything in their power to push through their proposed reform full of political gimmicks. Your action today will send a clear message to them; we don't want government-run health care. Thank you, my friend, for your support and involvement on this very important national issue. Thank you, ![]() John McCain P.S. The Democrats have pledged to "move forward" with their $2 trillion plan regardless of Republican support. But, it is up to us to do everything in our power to put a stop to the wasteful spending and enact health care reform in the right way. Please sign this petition today and if you are able to, make a generous contribution to my reelection effort. Thank you. |

As a corporation, Walmart believes it can make the greatest impact on the communities it serves globally by supporting causes that are important to its customers - right in their own neighborhoods. "Ensuring that the next generation has access to quality literature and early education is all of our responsibility, and Walmart is committed to doing its part," said Walmart Foundation President, Margaret McKenna. "From our associates who are reading in Walmart stores on October 8 to customers who support Jumpstart by buying The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Walmart, we're helping to instill a love for reading into children and planting seeds for their success in life." "With Walmart's generous support of Jumpstart's Read for the Record, I am convinced that this year's campaign is going to not only break a record to raise awareness about the importance of early education, but also directly help us donate more than 250,000 official campaign books to children in need," said Jumpstart President, James Cleveland. "Jumpstart is proud to have Walmart as such a dedicated partner and integral part of the 2009 Read for the Record campaign." | |||||

| Dear Phillip, They may play fake doctors on TV, but in real life Zach Braff and Donald Faison from Scrubs helped us create our first major television ad about health care. The ad will start airing tonight around the country, but we wanted to give Rock the Vote members a first look... Check out our new health care ad. At the same time our ad is going live, President Obama will be addressing Congress and the country about health insurance reform. Congress just got back from their "recess" and our Representatives are starting to make decisions about what kind of health care the American people should have. We must make sure that young adults and their needs are taken into account. That's why Zach and Donald helped with this ad - so we can spread the word about what's at stake and make it easy for the millions of young Americans to have their say. Watch the ad and take action now! Seriously, life happens...a bike accident, breaking your arm, catching a cold, the clap, swine flu, asthma, a bad allergy, peeing blood (!). I'm lucky that I have good health insurance and can go to a doctor if anything happens. Unfortunately, a lot of young people don't and they get screwed by a broken system. We are in the final stretch in this fight for quality, affordable health care. Young Americans have the most to gain from real reform - and the most to lose if it fails. We must step up and say "Yes, we care!" and demand health care reform today. Now is the time to speak up and be heard. Thank you, Heather |

| On Wednesday night, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, President Obama is delivering a major address on health insurance reform to a special joint session of Congress. It'll be a historic event -- and a turning point in our push for real reform. So we've organized special watch parties that night for all Organizing for America supporters, their friends, neighbors, and families -- and a local volunteer has decided to host one in your area. We'll gather together to hear directly from the President. And after the speech, everyone at these parties will be able to take part in an important conference call with former Obama for America campaign manager David Plouffe about the work we'll still need to do to help pass real reform this year. Will you come to a watch party during the President's address on Wednesday evening? This is a great opportunity to interact with other supporters who share your passion for reform at this critical moment. And it's an even better time to bring along that friend or co-worker who has had questions about reform or has heard a lot of the misinformation -- on Wednesday night, they'll be able to hear the facts straight from the President. With Congress back in session, we're ready to kick off the final sprint toward passing real reform. There's no better way to do it than coming together as a community. Hope you can make it. Weekly Column- Border Matters: U.S. and Canada Weekly column by Senator Susan Collins The United States and Canada have a long history of cooperation on matters ranging from defense and national security to environmental protection and trade. This relationship is especially important in Maine, where our Atlantic Canada neighbors often are co-workers, colleagues, friends and family. In most cases, the border we share is an avenue to friendship and commerce. On occasion, unfortunately, it can be a barrier to understanding and progress. It is essential that those barriers be removed whenever possible. I recently met with President Obama's nominee to be our next ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson, who currently serves as a Special Assistant to the President at the White House. He is a lawyer with extensive experience in commercial, securities, insurance, and business law. I used our meeting as an opportunity to discuss several contentious issues with Canada that must be resolved. Stay up to date with Senator Collins at Collins.Senate.Gov |

| At the beginning of August, President Obama wrote to the OFA community to challenge us to work hard, break through the noise and give the American people a voice in the fight for health insurance reform. It wasn't easy: With Congress back home, special interests and partisan attack groups went into overdrive spreading lies, and the media seemed to broadcast any story of conflict or division they could find. But you accepted the President's challenge -- and delivered. See it for yourself: Check out the latest photos and stories from around the country. Our strategy for the month was simple: engage the millions of individuals who know we need change to fight the lies and tell the truth, build support for reform, and ensure that support is highly visible while members of Congress are home gauging public opinion. We continued our methodical, battle-tested approach of volunteers reaching out online and offline in every part of the country. We offered the facts, answered questions and engaged those who were ready to get involved. And the results were extraordinary. OFA supporters like you came together in an unprecedented way over the past four weeks -- and it couldn't have happened without the individual volunteers who make it all possible:
Check out the latest photos and stories from the field to see this movement in action: http://my.barackobama.com/ontheground As Congress returns to D.C. and we roll up our sleeves for the final push toward reform, we know the hardest work may yet lie ahead. The special interests and those in Congress who have pledged to oppose the President no matter what will stoop even lower in the weeks ahead. But you should never doubt that we face the coming challenges together, as part of something far larger than any of us alone -- and far stronger than the old broken politics that have preserved the status quo for long enough. Our strategy is working. We are going to win this thing. Americans will finally get the health insurance reform we all need. Thank you for making it possible, Mitch Mitch Stewart Director Organizing for America |
