Commission on Fine Arts Request Further
Revisions of the Mount Pleasant Library Designs

On Thursday, July 16, at the Building Museum in downtown DC, the
Commission on Fine Arts (CFA) met to consider a second revision to the
Mount Pleasant Library design concept. In the end, they reluctantly
gave provisional concept approval with the request for more design
alternatives.
DC Public Libraries (DCPL), represented at the meeting by Project
Manager, Jeff Bonvechio along with the contracted-architect, Henry
Myerberg, presented new slides of the proposed Mount Pleasant Library
expansion -- an expansion of about 4,500 square feet out the back of the
library building.

Commissioners continued to express concern about the lack of
compatibility of the expansion design with the main historic structure
and its lack of exterior detailing.
And there was serious concerns about the proposed long-sloping ramp and
patio area on the North-West side of the building.
The Chair of the CFA, Mr. Earl Powell III, had concerns that the
proposed expansion exterior was "boring" and how it should "be nice to
look at," alluding to the tenants living in the buildings adjacent to
the library.
Further, Commissioner Plater-Zyberk, who voted against the approval of
the provisional design concept, said the program was too large for the
site and that going forward with this design could be "a regrettable
result."
In conclusion, the CFA agreed that floor layouts were good given what is
being asked by DCPL, but requested DCPL to come back with more
ramp/patio alternatives and options of the exterior detailing of the
expansion.
Community organizations were there to witness this, including the
District Dynamos and Historic Mount Pleasant.
