Senate Works to Protect Children & Consumers

Dear Friend,

Over the last couple of years, we have seen an astounding number of recalls of unsafe products, including many toys that were dangerous to our children and many defective items imported from overseas.

Yesterday, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to significantly strengthen consumer protections.  The bill increases funding and staff levels at the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which overseas product safety at the federal level, and empowers state attorneys general to enforce federal product safety laws at the state level. The bill also effectively bans lead in children's products and requires safety testing of children's products by third parties.  Finally, it increases fines against companies that violate safety laws and creates a publicly available online database of safety complaints.

I believe this bill is an important step forward in making sure our children's toys are safe and that we can have confidence in all of the products we purchase.

Sincerely,

KENT CONRAD
United States Senate
