The DC Summer Meals program offers free, nutritious meals and snacks to children 18 years and younger when they're out of school. Save Energy, Money with New Appliances

The DC Department of the Environment encourages consumers to purchase Energy Star-rated appliances and products to conserve energy, save money, and help protect the environment. An Energy Star-rated washing machine will save approximately $110 per year compared to a model without the Energy Star rating, manufactured before 1994. Also, an Energy Star-rated washing machine uses 50 percent less water per load.

DDOE is offering rebates of up to $150 through September 7 on qualifying appliances. Read more.

This Summer, Water a Street Tree

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), which oversees the city's 144,000 street trees, reminds District residents to join DDOT in the watering of young trees during this summer's hot and dry weather. So far this year, DDOT has planted roughly 4,000 trees across the District — many of them young street trees along sidewalks.

'Our tree canopy is one of the most magical things about the nation's capital,' said DDOT Director Emeka Moneme. 'Residents and visitors alike realize that Washington is a real 'tree city.' That's why it's important for us at DDOT to be proactive about protecting our existing trees and planting new ones.'

Moneme reminds residents who have a young tree near their sidewalk to help out by watering it with 10 gallons of water every week during hot, dry weather. Residents can skip the watering when it rains. Read more.
