Remembering 9/11, health care reform, and more updates

Friday, September 11 , 2009

Eight years ago today, our nation experienced one of its darkest days and finest hours.  With shocking suddenness, an act of unparalleled cruelty transformed a late-summer morning of uncommon brilliance into one of unimagined horror.  On that awful morning, September 11th was transformed from a mere point on the calendar into an eternal monument to the deepest human emotions of loss, of sacrifice, and of resolve.  Today, we pause to remember those whose lives were taken that terrible morning.  The loss we relive this day reminds us of the value of all that we must protect and the heroism reminds us of the unconquerable spirit of the American people.

Senator Collins' statement on the President's health care address

Senator Collins released this statement following the President's address to Congress.

"The problem of providing affordable access to quality health care for all Americans is one of the most significant domestic challenges facing our country. It affects every American and one-sixth of our economy.

"I continue to believe that addressing growing health care costs must be at the center of any health care reform legislation. The high cost is the major barrier to coverage for the uninsured and the reason why so many small businesses and middle-income families are struggling with the escalating cost of health insurance. Soaring costs also are a major burden for the federal and state budgets.

Lieberman, Collins seek to protect U.S. against biological and other terrorist WMD
Legislation Responds To Warnings of a WMD Terrorist Attack By 2013

As the nation marks the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent anthrax attacks, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., and Ranking Member Susan Collins, R-Me., Tuesday introduced legislation to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks from biological weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The Weapons of Mass Destruction Prevention and Preparedness Act of 2009 responds to a statement by the Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell in December 2008 and the findings of a Congressionally-mandated WMD commission that a WMD terrorist attack is more likely than not to occur by 2013 and that a biological attack is more likely than a nuclear attack.

Funding for Maine's police departments

U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe and U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $68,815 in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program funding to the City of Augusta, $35,384 for the City of Bangor, and $19,103 for the City of Calais.

"This Department of Justice funding will help our hardworking law enforcement officers get the essential equipment and key resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively," said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "Funding provided through the JAG program is critical to communities across the nation and in Maine and continues to provide vital support for law enforcement activities that serve to safeguard our communities."

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1- law enforcement programs, 2- prosecution and court programs, 3- prevention and education programs, 4- corrections and community corrections programs, 5- drug treatment programs, and 6- planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.

Senator Collins secures $59 million for Maine programs in Senate Defense Spending bill

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today that she has successfully secured $59 million for Maine programs in the FY 2010 Department of Defense spending bill.  This bill was approved today by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.  It must now be approved by the full Senate Appropriations Committee.

"This legislation will fund critical force protection and health care initiatives for American service members while continuing development of important technologies to counter existing and emerging threats," said Senator Collins, who is also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.  "These projects continue the valuable contributions of Maine companies to our national security by funding important defense programs in our state."

Our nation today marks the eighth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country.

Some of us acknowledge the solemn occasion by gathering with family members, friends or neighbors. Others offer silent prayers. No matter how we observe the day, we take time to remember and to reflect.

The attacks against America united us in a profound way. Eight years later, as we mourn those who were viciously murdered at the hands of terrorists, it is appropriate to take stock of where our nation's security stands now.

It is critical for us to acknowledge our security successes and to highlight emerging threats that still must be addressed.
