The benefits of lower-tier drugs
If you're taking a Tier 2 or Tier 3 medication, you may be able to lower your copays and retail drug costs by switching to a lower-tier (Tier 1 or Tier 2) drug option. In fact, you could save 40%1 or more on your copay at a retail pharmacy if you switch to a lower-tier option.

Ask your doctor if there is a lower-tier drug option for your current medication. Drugs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 often have alternatives on a lower tier that are approved by the FDA to treat many of the same conditions. These alternatives can have similar clinical effectiveness, at a lower cost.

How to help delay and minimize the coverage gap

Using Tier 1 drugs can reduce your out-of-pocket spending and lower your total drug costs (the amount you and the plan pay for your drug). The lower your total drug costs are, the less chance you'll have of entering the coverage gap.

If you do enter the coverage gap, Tier 1 drugs can help lower your out-of-pocket costs.

Another way to help lower your drug costs is by ordering your prescriptions from your Preferred Mail Service Pharmacy through Prescription Solutions. You could pay less for the same medications:
  • $0 copay for a 90-day supply of Tier 1 medications, typically generic drugs.2
  • Save up to $15 compared to what you would pay at a network retail pharmacy for a 90-day supply of your Tier 2 and Tier 3 medications, typically brand-name drugs.2
  • AARP MedicareRx Enhanced Plan members pay a $14 copay for a 90-day supply of Tier 1 medications during the coverage gap.

You are not required to use the plan's Preferred Mail Service Pharmacy, through Prescription Solutions, to obtain a supply of your maintenance medications. You have the option of using Prescription Solutions, a retail extended day supply pharmacy or non-preferred mail service pharmacy in the network to obtain a supply of maintenance medications.

If you choose a retail extended day supply pharmacy or non-preferred mail service pharmacy, you may see out-of-pocket payment differences when compared to using the Preferred Mail Service Pharmacy. You should experience no out-of-pocket payment differences if choosing between a retail extended day supply pharmacy and a non-preferred mail service pharmacy. Please call UnitedHealthcare Customer Service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for up-to-date information on which pharmacies are in the network.

Your prescriptions should ship in about seven days from the date the completed order is received by Prescription Solutions. If Prescription Solutions needs to contact you or your prescribing physician to clarify information on your order or to request prescriptions from your physician, delivery may take longer. If you prefer rush delivery, medications can be shipped overnight for an additional charge.

Prescription Solutions will contact you if they anticipate there will be an extended delay in the delivery of your medications. If you need your medications immediately, Prescription Solutions can coordinate a refill with a local retail pharmacy. Standard delivery is no charge to U.S. addresses, including U.S. territories.

For copay amounts, drug coverage information or general plan questions, please contact UnitedHealthcare Customer Service.

NOTE: If you are receiving extra help from Medicare, your copays may be lower or you may have no copays.
