Dear Friends:

DC Vote is travelling to Mississippi. Do you have any contacts in the state? Can you help us put together meetings with organizations or individuals who may be interested in helping to protect DC's democracy?

Why Mississippi?

As we continue to fight for DC voting rights, DC Vote is going to Mississippi to send a message to Representative Travis Childers (D-MS) to spend his limited time in Washington addressing the needs of Mississippians rather than trampling on DC's right to democracy.

About Our Trip

Members of Congress are attempting to derail the DC House Voting Rights Act (H.R.157/S.160) by attaching a poisonous amendment to rewrite DC's gun laws. This amendment was conceived and written last fall by Rep. Childers. Since then, DC elected leadership changed the gun laws to comply fully with the Second Amendment. Not only is Rep. Childers' bill outdated and unnecessary, it attacks basic ideals of American democracy by eviscerating local gun laws and banning elected leadership from modifying gun control laws for the District...ever.

Ilir Zherka, DC Vote Executive Director, and I will travel to Southhaven, Tupelo and Columbus to meet with community groups, students and media. We will educate Mississippi citizens about the issue of democracy in DC and urge local residents to support our common sense approach to local democracy.

Rep. Childers would never allow his colleagues in Congress to write Mississippi's laws. He should afford DC the same respect he would show any other locality in America.

Help Us Connect with Mississippi Residents!

Do you support taking the fight for full democracy to Rep. Childers' home state? Please contact me at ekinlow@dcvote.org or at 202.462.6000 x13 with information of individuals or organizations we can visit in Mississippi and forward this e-mail to people who may be interested. Please note that Rep. Childers' district is in the northern part of the state and includes suburbs of Memphis, Tennessee such as the city of Southhaven and DeSoto County. Sincerely,

Eugene D. Kinlow
Public Affairs Director
