Senators urge bipartisanship in health reform
Senators Nelson, Snowe, Lieberman, Collins, Landrieu and Wyden send letter to Senate leaders

A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging bipartisanship in addressing comprehensive health care reform.

In their letter to Senate leaders the senators wrote that "we are firmly committed to enactment of comprehensive reform this year" and urged the leaders "to resist timelines which prevent us from achieving the best result."

Interior Secretary to visit Acadia National Park
Senator Collins invited Secretary Salazar to visit Maine's National Park

Senator Collins  announced that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has accepted her invitation to visit Acadia National Park on Saturday, July 25.

"Acadia National Park is a true gem of the Maine coastline and one of the most visited national parks in the United States," said Senator Collins. "In seven years, Acadia will be 100 years old. Age has brought both increasing popularity and greater pressures. I welcome this opportunity, not only to share the beauty of our beloved Acadia National Park with Secretary Salazar, but to also discuss the critically important steps that are being taken to ensure the long-term health of Acadia."

Exact details of Secretary Salazar's visit are still being finalized and will be announced later this week. It is expected that Senator Collins and Secretary Salazar will tour Acadia National Park with Superintendent Sheridan Steele, view the Island Explorer bus system, visit Schoodic Education and Research Center, and meet with park service employees.

A Lesson in Democracy
Weekly column by Senator Collins

Recently, I welcomed to Washington four outstanding high-school students from Maine – our state's delegates to Boys and Girls Nation.  Robert Michaud of Limington, Carl Zurhorst of Rumford, Kathryn Walsh of Westbrook, and Kate Weigel of Brewer joined delegates from throughout the country for an invaluable week-long experience in citizenship and government.  It was a great pleasure to meet them.

These young leaders got to Washington through a lot of hard work. Academic achievement, community service, and excelling at Dirigo Boys and GirlsState here in Maine all went into making this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity possible.

They also got to Washington with a lot of help.  For more than 60 years, the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary have sponsored these programs, fulfilling their commitment to instill in our young people an understanding of our system of government and a deeper appreciation for our American ideals.  Throughout their lives, these students have had parents, teachers, and community members supporting them and encouraging them to follow their dreams.

BREAKING:
Senate approves Defense Bill that includes Senator Collins' provisions for BIW, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Saco Defense, and UMaine
Bill also authorizes $28 million for construction of new hangar at Bangor Air National Guard base

With the support of Senator Susan Collins, the U.S. Senate, late Thursday, approved the fiscal year 2010 Defense Authorization bill, which authorizes $679.8 billion in funding for the U.S. Department of Defense. The bill includes key provisions authored by Senator Collins that will support work at Bath Iron Works, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the University of Maine, Saco Defense, and other Maine companies that support our national security efforts.

"This legislation contains a variety of crucial provisions that will provide critical force protection to our men and women in uniform; restore our military's readiness; and continue the development of technologies to counter existing and emerging threats. It also includes key shipbuilding provisions that are important to the Navy, Bath Iron Works, and our overall national security," said Senator Collins, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committees. "In addition, the Senate has again recognized the valuable contributions of Maine companies to our national security by supporting my request to authorize funding for important defense programs in our state."

At Senator Collins' request, the Senate bill helps ensure a continued and steady workload at BIW by authorizing $1 billion in funding for construction of the third DDG-1000 and honors the agreement, that Senator Collins helped negotiate, to build all three of these ships at BIW. In addition, this legislation authorizes $2.2 billion for continued DDG-51 procurement, nearly $150 million for the DDG-51 modernization program, and $1.4 billion for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program.
