I welcome this opportunity, not only to share the beauty of our beloved Acadia National Park with Secretary Salazar, but to also discuss the critically important steps that are being taken to ensure the long-term health of Acadia." It is expected that Senator Collins and Secretary Salazar will tour Acadia National Park with Superintendent Sheridan Steele, view the Island Explorer bus system, visit Schoodic Education and Research Center, and meet with park service employees. A Lesson in Democracy Weekly column by Senator Collins Recently, I welcomed to Washington four outstanding high-school students from Maine our state's delegates to Boys and Girls Nation. Robert Michaud of Limington, Carl Zurhorst of Rumford, Kathryn Walsh of Westbrook, and Kate Weigel of Brewer joined delegates from throughout the country for an invaluable week-long experience in citizenship and government. It was a great pleasure to meet them. These young leaders got to Washington through a lot of hard work. Academic achievement, community service, and excelling at Dirigo Boys and GirlsState here in Maine all went into making this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity possible. They also got to Washington with a lot of help. For more than 60 years, the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary have sponsored these programs, fulfilling their commitment to instill in our young people an understanding of our system of government and a deeper appreciation for our American ideals. Throughout their lives, these students have had parents, teachers, and community members supporting them and encouraging them to follow their dreams.
