IN THE NEWS Getting to Know Joe: Biden's Sister Stumps for Dems' VP Nominee
By Jennifer Todd Lancaster Intelligencer-Journal September 26th, 2008 Sen. Joe Biden was always the "leader of the pack," his younger sister said -- not because he was a bully, but because he had a gift for inspiring people. "He was always encouraging, always saying, 'Go ahead, just try it,' and other kids looked up to him for that," Valerie Biden Owens said. "They were drawn to him, and they followed him." By Curtis Sittenfeld TIME Magazine September 27, 2008 Michelle Obama is tall, smart, funny, relaxed and basically so glowy and poised -- if she's attractive in pictures, she's flat-out gorgeous in person -- that it almost seems as if she already is the First Lady. Or at least this is the conclusion I came to after sitting down with her at Denver's Westin Tabor Center during the Democratic National Convention. I'd been tagging after her for a couple of days, from one rapturous audience to another, including the crowd at a community-service event for soldiers, at which an Iraq-war veteran introduced her by announcing, "Ma'am, I know you weren't in the military, but I'd follow you anywhere." If all that hadn't quite convinced me (it was the Democratic Convention, after all), I'd guess it took roughly the first 30 seconds of our interview for me to fall for her. It happened when I asked whether she gets bored giving the same speech over and over, and she cheerfully replied, "Yeah, absolutely." Read the rest of the story. Women For Obama Tout their Candidate at Hagerstown Picnic
By Marie Gilbert The Herald Mail September 27, 2008 HAGERSTOWN -- The T-shirts, buttons and banners tell of their allegiance. They are supporters of Barack Obama. Some previously had worked for Hillary Clinton, others had been undecided. But now, they firmly are in the Illinois senator's corner. They are Women for Obama -- a grass-roots effort to connect women with information about the Democratic presidential candidate and his position on issues. "We want people to learn as much as they can about Barack Obama," said Lucretia Jefferson, chairwoman of the local organization. "We work the telephones, we canvass, we do whatever we can to connect with voters." Read the rest of the story. New York Women Politicos Come Out for Obama
By Marcia Yerman Huffington Post September 26, 2008 NEW YORK -- On Sunday, September 21, Women for Obama held a press conference on the steps of City Hall. Arriving early, after navigating the security point guarding the government edifice (referred to by one official as "the house of the people"), I had a chance to interview some of those who had been invited to attend. In contrast to the narrative that has been promulgated about disgruntled Hillary supporters, the women I conversed with had moved on without trauma. Martha Baker, a consultant on work/family issues, was sporting a button that announced Hillary Supports Obama, So Do I. "He's our candidate," she told me. One of the forces behind the Women For Parity website, which began as "Hillary Voices," she referenced viewing "the campaigns through a women's issues prism." ON THE ISSUES Barack's Plan to Strengthen the Economy Last week, Senator Obama was in Wisconsin talking about the economy. Read his statement: "We cannot give a blank check to Washington with no oversight. No oversight and no accountability is exactly what got us in this mess in the first place... For too long the doors of Washington have been open to an army of lobbyists and special interests. We must reform waste and abuse in the government." By the Editors Minnesota Women's Press October 1st, 2008 ...Why would a newspaper that champions the election of women turn its back on a ticket with a female vice presidential candidate? MWP's history has been one of building community and empowering and honoring women. Not surprisingly, the publication is a champion of getting more women in elected office, and supports women who would build the best future for America's daughters and sons. But some are hearing that because the vice presidential candidate is a woman, many American women will automatically vote for Palin. The MWP believes that gender alone is not good enough. Canton Repository Endorses Obama-Biden Ticket for President By the Editors Canton Repository September 28, 2008 CANTON, OH -- The United States is moving in the wrong direction. That is what the polls say. What do you think? We think that the United States is moving in many wrong directions. On Main Street, families are watching their homes and retirement savings lose value while the cost of their most basic needs goes up and up. On Wall Street, a hands-off approach to oversight of financial institutions has led to the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Halfway around the world, the United States remains mired in a country it should never have invaded. Stark Countians rightly want change in Washington. The Repository editorial board believes that the presidential candidate who can deliver on this demand is Democrat Barack Obama. Read the rest of the endorsement.. WOMEN LEADERS ON THE CAMPAIGN
STATEMENT FROM BARACK OBAMA ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
"Too often, victims of domestic violence don't know where to turn, or have no one to turn to. And too often, a victim could be someone you love. That's why, as a State Senator, I led the fight in Illinois to pass one of the strongest employment protection laws in the nation, ensuring that victims of domestic violence could seek shelter or treatment without losing their jobs. That's why I introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate to provide $25 million a year to domestic violence prevention and victim support efforts. That's why I co-sponsored and helped reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. And today, I am so proud to have Senator Joe Biden, the man who wrote that groundbreaking legislation that gave so many women a second chance at life, as my running mate in this campaign." "For me, the fight against cancer is deeply personal. My mother died of ovarian cancer in the prime of her life. And at a time when she should have been focused on getting well, she was lying in a hospital bed arguing with her insurance company because they refused to cover her treatment. "For millions of Americans, my mother's story is all too familiar. That's why, as President, I will make the fight against cancer an urgent national priority by doubling federal cancer research funding. What's more, I'll enact health care reform that guarantees affordable coverage for every American who wants it, and we'll make sure that insurance companies can no longer discriminate against those who are sick and need care the most. Because screening saves lives, I'll require coverage of essential preventive services like mammograms in all federally supported health plans. And because breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among African-American women and Latinas, we'll come together to address the root causes of health disparities by promoting prevention, strengthening public health, and implementing patient navigation programs."
