Florida's Votes Count

Florida Democrats Florida Democrats

Dear Florida Democrat,

Your voices were heard loud and clear today in Washington.

It was a long day, and it's been a long, long time coming, but finally, it's official:

Florida's Votes Count.

This afternoon, the Democratic National Committee recognized the importance of Florida's voters. The DNC's decision allows for all of Florida's 211 delegates to be seated at the National Convention and cast one-half vote each, putting us on equal footing with Florida Republicans (who were penalized by their national party with a 50% delegation reduction).

Today's announcement allows for Florida's voices to be heard and for the spirit of our national party's rules to be preserved. Because it is an important step toward winning Florida in November, both the Clinton and Obama campaigns support this decision.

No matter who wins, they both agree that a strong and passionate Florida delegation must participate in the nomination of the next President of the United States of America.

During this incredible primary season, you've responded with courage at every step. You turned out in record fashion - 1.75 million strong - to do your civic duty and vote.

In every part of our state, activists like you stepped up to the plate to build grassroots operations, even campaigning on street corners with cardboard cutouts of your favorite candidate - all because you believe, like I do, that this country desperately needs change.

That's what keeps us together: the belief that this country can be a better place.

Each and every one of us believes that Americans deserve better from their leaders.

President Bush and the Republican Party have taken this country in a terrible direction.

We must prevent a third Bush term. Alone, Florida Democrats can stop John McCain. He cannot win the White House without our 27 electoral votes.

Those 27 votes are what we must focus on from now until November 4th.

Don't lose sight of what matters most. Divided, we will fail.

But together - united - we can change our country for the better.

Let's get back to work!

Sincerely,
Karen L. Thurman
Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman
Chair, Florida Democratic Party
