* Highlights of a GAO Forum: Engaging and Retaining Older Workers
Highlights of a GAO Forum: Engaging and Retaining Older Workers, GAO-07-438SP, February 28, 2007.
  • "In the future, older Americans are expected to be a larger share of the U.S. population, live longer, and spend more years in retirement than previous generations, and by 2025 labor force growth is expected to be less than a fifth of what it is today. Without major increases in productivity or immigration, low labor force growth will ultimately lead to slower economic and federal revenue growth. This in turn will accentuate the overall pressure on the federal budget, which will face increased claims for Medicare and Social Security benefits while relatively fewer workers pay into the benefits systems. Moreover, the possible loss of many experienced workers as the baby boomers retire could lead to further adverse effects. If older Americans were to remain in the labor force longer, it could ease some of the pressures on Social Security, supplement individual retirement incomes, and help finance health care."
  • * DOD OIG Audit of Navy Purchases for and from Governmental Sources
D-2007-062 Department of the Navy Purchases for and from Governmental Sources (Project D2006-D000FH-0021.000), February 28, 2007, PDF or View Summary Only.
    * E-Gov Sites Begin Development for Wider Accessibility Via Search Engines
GovExec.com: Google moves ahead with plan to open up federal Web sites: "Three federal organizations recently agreed to structure their sites to make them accessible for nearly all Internet searches, [Google] officials said."

    * Reps. Boucher and Doolittle Introduce the FAIR USE Act of 2007
Press release: "U.S. Representatives Rick Boucher (D-VA) and John Doolittle (R-CA), today introduced the Freedom And Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship Act of 2007 (FAIR USE Act) to protect the fair use rights of users of copyrighted material and thereby enable consumers of digital media to use it in ways that enhance their personal convenience. The legislation contains several improvements to the Digital Media Consumer's Rights Act, similar legislation which the lawmakers introduced in the 108th and 109th Congresses. The International Military Tribunal, under the jurisdiction of the Allied Control Authority for Germany, directed the publication of this series."
  • * World Book Day 2007 in the UK and Ireland will take place on Thursday 1st March
"World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 80 years ago...It is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all. A main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own."
    * U.S. Army Field Manuals, War Department/Department of the Army Pamphlets
Library of Congress - U.S. Army Field Manuals, War Department/Department of the Army Pamphlets: "The full text of selected U.S. Army Field Manuals (FMs), War Department Pamphlets (WD PAMs), and Department of the Army Pamphlets (DA PAMs), which particularly address some of the current research needs and interests of The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center & School Library, U.S. Army, Charlottesville, Virginia, will be added regularly to this site."

    * Prisoner Transfers Speeded by eDesignate System
"The eDesignate is a secure, electronic, web-based system that allows a probation office and the U.S. Marshals Service to electronically transmit documents to the BOP after a defendant is sentenced to custody. That is proving to be a welcome alternative to collecting and mailing paper documents to the BOP, a process that is more labor-intensive and expensive. Developed by the Information Technology Division of the Department of Justice’s Office of the Federal Detention Trustee, eDesignate enables agencies to quickly exchange data, which allows for more effective scheduling of prisoners' ground and air transportation."
