Early last December, Bad Boy went to Machida Artes Marciais in Belem, Brazil to visit Bad Boy Fighter, Lyoto ³The Dragon² Machida in his 10th week of training for his fight with Thiago Silva at UFC 94.
The following video is a brief look into the training that Lyoto has maintained since the cancellation of his fight with Silva at UFC 89. Rather than stop his training, Lyoto continued on and kept a steady pace, working on his conditioning and technique under the supervision of his father and Shotokan Karate Master Yoshizo Machida, his brother Chinzo, and his conditioning coach Eduardo Bastos. Bad Boy Fighter Lyoto ³The Dragon² Machida showed the fans in Las Vegas just how exciting Karate adapted for MMA can be last Saturday night at UFC 94. Thiago Silva served as Lyoto¹s unlucky opponent for this demonstration and wasn¹t very coherent by the end of the fight, which ended only one second before the end of the first round.
The fight between Lyoto and Thiago was billed as a record breaker. Both fighters had a perfect record up until that fateful night, but, as already stated, only Lyoto maintains his status of UNDEFEATED. It was obvious from the start that Lyoto was more than prepared for this fight.
Thiago should have watched the Bad Boy video of Lyoto Machida in training. In that video, we learn that Lyoto¹s primary strategy is counter attack. This strategy is central in the teachings of traditional Shotokan Karate. Simply put: an opponent is most vulnerable right before or after he or she attacks. So, the surest way to catch the opponent off-balance is to attack them in these moments. Lyoto employed this tactic over and over, while Thiago continued to advance, seemingly with no thought for his own safety. This weakened Thiago to a point where it was impossible for Thiago to defend against any offence that Lyoto may decide to employ.
Late in the first round, having suffered the full effects of Lyoto¹s counter attacks, Thiago was taken down with another footsweep, then Lyoto surprised the crowd and Thiago with a devastating blow to Thiago¹s head just a second before the bell that would have ended the first round.
Para bems Lyoto!
Kind regards
