Dear Friend,
The nation and the world have high hopes for President Obama - hopes that he'll deliver on his promises of economic justice for all. And, in his first full week in office, he did just that when he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier for employees to fight pay discrimination.
In today's troubled economic times, all sectors of society are facing financial hardship. But that doesn't mean economic justice can be sacrificed. In fact, it's all the more important that we protect the rights of hard-working Americans.
At Progressive Majority, we're proud that our elected officials deliver on their promises every day. Once in office, they take the bold action needed to safeguard our progressive values of economic justice, civil rights, quality health care and public education, responsible environmental stewardship and reproductive freedom.
Progressive Majority elected officials John Chiang and Tami Green are examples of this, and they lead with the essential value of economic justice in mind.
- In California, State Controller Chiang, whom Progressive Majority helped elect in 2006, stood up to Gov. Schwarzenegger, and refused to cut state employees' salaries to minimum wage, as the governor ordered. The governor ultimately forced a budget that hurts state workers, but now, Chiang is a talked-about candidate to succeed Schwarzenegger in 2010.
- In Washington state, State Rep. Green, whom Progressive Majority helped elect in 2006, has introduced legislation to grant fair labor protection to nurses working at public facilities such as state hospitals, nursing homes and rehab centers - protection that, amazingly, Washington nurses have not been granted up until now.
At Progressive Majority, we have high expectations for our candidates - before they're elected and once they're in office. That's why we only endorse candidates who align 100 percent with our progressive values. Elected officials Controller Chiang and Rep. Green and hundreds of their colleagues around the country are the vindication of our hard work. They're the reason we need your financial support, so we can identify and train candidates, and help them get elected. They are doing the people's work, and we're proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them.
Please click here to help us continue to elect great progressive leaders, leaders who will fight for our common values of equality and justice.
Sincerely,
Gloria A. Totten
President
