Mayor's Education Plan Passes Congress; Town Halls Begin

The United States Senate unanimously passed Mayor Fenty's education reform package, which now awaits President George W. Bush's signature. Meanwhile, the Administration has begun hosting town hall meetings across the District to gather input on improving the schools and set up an online form to collect feedback. Read more.


Work Begins on Temporary Eastern Market

Mayor Fenty, Councilmember Tommy Wells, Board of Education Member Lisa Raymond and others broke ground on a new temporary home for Eastern Market vendors. The interim site is at Hine Junior High School, a location Capitol Hill residents and Eastern Market vendors and merchants identified and approved as an appropriate venue during reconstruction of the permanent market.

Turner Construction Company will manage the development of the market, which is scheduled to open for business in July. Read more.


Mayor Testifies on Voting Rights in Senate

The United States Senate is considering the DC Voting Rights Act, which would give the District its first-ever voting member of the House of Representatives. The House passed a similar measure in April.

Mayor Fenty testified in support of the Senate bill before the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. Read more.


Get Up to $10,000 for College

College-bound District students can receive up to $10,000 a year for their higher education expenses. Eligible schools include public universities and colleges across the United States, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and private universities in the District area. The DC State Education Office administers three college financial aid grants with a single application: the OneApp. The deadline is June 30. Read more.


District Stars in Summer Movie Season

Six movies opening this summer, all potential blockbusters, have one thing in common. They were shot in the District of Columbia! The District is gaining momentum in the movie business by serving as a backdrop for an increasing number of films. Read more.


Swim Time! District Pools Begin to Open

Cool off with a dip in the pool. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation has begun opening its outdoor pools for the season. Thanks to a partnership with Amerigroup Community Care, admission to the pools is free for District residents. In all, the District operates 33 pools in all 8 wards. Read more.

    Press release: "...new innovations for Google Maps...offer a whole new perspective on search: Street View and Mapplets.     * DHS OIG Report on 2004 Airline Security Incident Released Via FOIA Request
    Washington Times: The inspector general for Homeland Security late Friday released new details of what federal air marshals say was a terrorist dry run aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 327 from Detroit to Los Angeles on June 29, 2004. Several portions of the report remain redacted. The release stems from a Freedom of Information request by The Washington Times in April 2006. The Times first reported on July 22 that this and other probes and dry runs were occurring on commercial flights since the September 11 terrorist attacks."
