24th Annual JCWP Begins
The 2007 Jimmy Carter Work Project begins Oct. 28 in Los Angeles, Calif. Thousands of volunteers from around the world will gather to build 30 new homes in South Central L.A. and repair 70 existing homes in neighborhoods surrounding the new construction sites.
The Families of JCWP 1995
Twelve years ago, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter traveled to Los Angeles for the 12th annual Jimmy Carter Work Project. During the weeklong Habitat build, President and Mrs. Carter and volunteers built some 30 houses in the Los Angeles area. Twenty-one of those homes were built in a neighborhood in Watts.
Thrivent Builds 500th House
Last week, Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans celebrated a milestone--the 500th house built through the groundbreaking partnership, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County in Pontiac, Mich., led construction of the first, the 500th and the 501st homes of this impressive alliance.

Give Women the Right to Own Their Home
At home one day. Homeless the next. This scenario is all too common for women in developing countries where they don't have the legal right to own their family homes. The GROWTH Act in Congress would help fix this problem by strengthening property rights for women living in poverty worldwide. If you haven't already, send a note to your members of Congress.

Agreement Reached on Fire Hydrant Maintenance

The District Government and DC Water and Sewer Authority have signed an agreement to improve maintenance and standards for fire hydrants. The agreement outlines the financial and physical responsibilities of each agency, removing confusion from the process of maintaining more than 9,000 public fire hydrants. Read more.

Mayor Appoints Schools Ombudsman; Announces Town Hall

Mayor Fenty has named Tonya Vidal Kinlow as the first Ombudsman for Public Education in the District of Columbia. The Ombudsman will serve as a single point of contact for parents, teachers and students with concerns about public and public charter schools—from kindergarten to the University of the District of Columbia.

The Mayor and the DC Public Schools are hosting a town hall meeting Nov. 3 for young people to speak out about their schools. Read more.

Meters for the District

Mayor Fenty has announced that the District will switch to time-and-distance meters in taxicabs. The meters will replace the current zone system, which has been in place for more than 70 years and is the only one of its kind in a major American city. Read more.

DC Village Gives Way to Enhanced Homeless Services

The Fenty Administration has closed DC Village, one of the District's emergency shelters. More than 106 families from the shelter system have been placed in scattered site apartments throughout the city. This "housing first" approach is a national best practice in the delivery of services to people who are homeless. Read more.

Republicans Asleep at the Wheel

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

Dear Friends,

Contribute today and House Dems will MATCH and DOUBLE your gift!
Two years ago, the Republicans were so confident they would keep their Majority in Congress that they fell asleep at the wheel. As we approach our one-year-out deadline, House Democrats will not make the same mistake.

We're in a great position next year to have both a Democrat in the White House backed up by a strong Democratic Majority in Congress -- but we can't take anything for granted. Right now, there are more than 60 Democrats representing congressional districts that President Bush carried in 2004. Next year we will have to work hard to protect the more than 30 Democrats in the most challenging districts even as we help Democratic challengers across the nation.

We are only 7 days away from reporting our One-Year-Out fundraising totals. The Republicans, the media, and the pundits will all use these numbers to show our strength to fight in 70 districts nationwide. We need $700,000 by our One-Year-Out deadline -- at least $10,000 for each of the 70 House seats that are in play.

With Election Day only one year away -- please contribute now to the DCCC and House Democrats will MATCH and DOUBLE your gift, tripling its impact.

You can bet the Republicans know how important it is to show their strength with one year to go. This week, they are gathering their special interest big money friends for a fundraiser to support their challengers who are taking on our most vulnerable Democrats. Their event is expected to raise close to $100,000 this week ALONE to help their candidates. With George Bush also holding fundraisers across the country this month to get millions more for Republicans, we will need to fight even harder to keep our campaign strong.

Please help us show our strength to the media and the Republicans One-Year-Out from Election Day -- contribute now and House Democrats will MATCH and DOUBLE your gift.

With more than 70 seats up for grabs, the outcome of next year's House races could determine the course of our country for generations to come. It has never been more important to keep the pressure on so Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats can accelerate our progress for America.

We are now just one year out.

Sincerely,

Chris Van Hollen
DCCC Chairman

P.S. Next year we have an historic opportunity to put a Democrat in the White House and give them a solid Democratic Majority in Congress. But with more than 70 seats up for grabs, we can't take anything for granted. Contribute now to our One-Year-Out campaign and House Democrats will MATCH and DOUBLE your generous contribution.
