MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

Rep. Hoyer discusses local impact of the economic recovery bill at new school construction site.

Over the past two weeks, Congress has been working on President Obama's American  Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create and save jobs by rebuilding America and  investing in our communities. Under the current version of the bill, Maryland stands to receive between three to four billion dollars to invest in places like Prince Frederick Maryland, where ground has been broken on a new middle school, but a budget shortfall threatens to delay the project. Or in Laurel - at the busiest rail station on the MARC line - where the wooden platform and century-old structure is in desperate need of overdue upgrades.

Last week, I met with mayors from throughout the 5th Congressional District to discuss the economic recovery plan and how it could potentially impact our communities. There is a lot of hope that this plan will provide just what our economy and our people need to weather this recession and move the country forward.

On Wednesday, I joined Members of Congress at the White House as President Obama signed legislation reauthorizing the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) into law. This historic legislation, vetoed twice by President Bush, will now cover 11 million children, including an additional 4 million uninsured but eligible kids. With rising unemployment and more families struggling to afford health care, this children's health bill is more critical than ever. This is exactly the kind of change Americans voted for in November, and I am proud that this legislation is finally law.

Finally, this week, Congress acted to delay the transition to digital television to June 12, 2009. The four-month delay is needed to provide more time for consumers to purchase converter boxes so they don't lose their signal when the transition occurs. You can apply for converter box coupons and obtain more information about the transition at www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009.

As always, thank you for allowing me to share this update with you. If there is anything you wish to share with me or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
