Election Day Registration Fact Sheet
What is Election Day Registration?
Also known as Same-Day Voter Registration, Election Day Registration (EDR) allows eligible voters to register when they vote. It is currently in use in some form in 10 states.
Who does EDR Benefit? It helps people likely to have problems registering including:
People with Disabilities, People Who Move, Young People and Historically Disenfranchised Voters
Is there a Partisan Advantage? No, EDR states routinely fall on both sides of the aisle. EDR helps citizens not parties or agendas.
How does the cost compare? Election officials report the cost of EDR does not exceed the cost of registering voters in a registration office and providing provisional ballots on Election Day.
Does it increase voter fraud? No, EDR may actually REDUCE voter fraud.
· Registration occurs in polling places with election officials (who are trained and motivated to prevent erroneous registrations) rather than with DMV employees.
· The increased voter turnout that EDR enables will proportionately decrease the effect of what fraud does occur.
· EDR's in person voter identification and authentication is more reliable than the current mail-in forms only requiring a signature.
