Dear Supporters:

The historic election of Barack Obama, a DC voting rights supporter, as the next President of the United States provides our movement with a "righteous wind at our backs." Last night, we gained some crucial allies in our fight for equal representation and now, more than ever, is a time for us to unite to demand the vote!

Barack Obama and Joe Biden are strong supporters of DC voting rights. Additionally, a number of potential DC voting rights supporters defeated senators who opposed the DC Voting Rights Act (S. 1257). For the first time in a generation, we will likely have enough votes to secure passage and enactment of DC voting rights legislation with a President who will sign the bill into law.

However, there is still work to be done to make our hopes a reality. We must educate new members of Congress and reach out to them to ensure that DC voting rights gets priority consideration. To continue to raise awareness, we are organizing a Veterans Day rally on November 11 to honor DC residents who have fought and died in every war while being denied equal representation.

Join us on November 11 and help us send a message to the new administration and new Congress that you demand the vote and expect action early next year!

We are meeting with our board, coalition and congressional allies to discuss the implications of the election and our strategy for 2009. While the Congress is most likely to pass the existing DC Voting Rights Act, we also want to explore the possibility of additional steps that Congress could take to provide even greater democracy to DC residents.

We look forward to seeing you at the Veterans Day rally on November 11 and to working with our allies in the Congress and the White House. Victory for DC Vote in 2009 is possible, but we will need your continued support to achieve it!

Sincerely,

Ilir Zherka
Executive Director
