Women's Leadership Forum rolls into the New Year

Women's Vote Center
DECEMBER 2007

SPREAD THE WORD AND GET OUT THE VOTE. Women will be a major force in the 2008 elections.  A majority of female voters are Democrats and women vote at higher numbers than men.   In addition, a new poll performed by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research demonstrates that unmarried women in particular are very involved in the 2008 elections and have a strong desire to change the direction of the country.  For a copy of this survey, please send an e-mail to grosfelds@dnc.org and it will be sent to you.

It is not too early to plan to get out the vote, and we can start by registering as many women as we can.  Start today by sending an e-mail to your friends, relatives, book groups, clubs and to women's groups on college campuses encouraging women to register and vote in 2008.  As activists, we are the ones who can best describe how voting empowers women to get the kinds of legislation we need to move ahead.  Start discussing ways that you can get out the vote in your community.  Discuss carpools to make sure everyone has transportation on Election Day.  Discuss Election Day breakfasts and election coverage dinners to watch the results with a group of women. Talk about walking to the polls as a group.  For voter registration information visit www.democrats.org/RegisterToVote

WOMEN ARE IMPORTANT MENTORS FOR YOUNGER GENERATIONS OF DEMOCRATIC LEADERS.  December is a month filled with family gatherings and holiday festivities.  The holiday season is a great time to mentor the younger women in your life.  Talk to these women about the importance of voting, Democratic values, and why you are a Democrat.  Plan a lunch outing, co-create a website encouraging women to register and vote and participate together in your local or state Democratic Party events.  For more information on activities in your own state, visit www.democrats.org/events.

THE 2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION GOES GREEN.  The 2008 Democratic National Convention will be "the most environmentally friendly event of its kind."  The Denver area is known for being health conscious and environmentally savvy.  Keeping with Denver's image, the convention will use clean electricity, materials that are recyclable, and hybrid buses for transportation.  Denver's new light rail system will also provide direct transportation to the Convention.  For more information and volunteer registration visit www.demconvention.com

IN CONGRESS

DEMOCRATS ARE LEADING THE WAY WITH ALTERNATIVE FUELS AND RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICIES.  Democrats in Congress are considering innovative ways to encourage development of alternative energy and to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.  It is clear that Democrats will lead the way to make energy clean, safe and affordable and our country more "Green."   Take action today by visiting www.democrats.org and hit the "action" link at the top of the page to see how you can make a difference.

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAS BEEN DISASTOROUS FOR WORKERS.   Job growth and economic opportunity under the Bush Administration has been bleak, with health care costs skyrocketing and pensions dwindling.  As the gap in wages and benefits grows wider between lower, middle and upper income ranges, minimum wage workers are particularly threatened by the prospect of falling into severe poverty and homelessness if they were to become unemployed. Millions of workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own are ineligible for unemployment insurance due to serious problems and inequities in the system. Last year, fewer than half of the people who lost their jobs were able to receive unemployment compensation.

Unemployment insurance is an absolute necessity for low wage workers who lose their jobs and S. 1871, the Unemployment Insurance Modernization Act sponsored by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) is intended to assist unemployed people who should be eligible for support but currently are not.

For instance, if a victim of domestic violence is compelled to leave her job and move to another location in order to find a safe haven, she does not qualify for unemployment insurance. S. 1871 helps victims by offering incentives for states to provide unemployment insurance in these circumstances, as well as others detailed in the legislation.

Passage of this bill will have a profound impact upon the lives of millions of unemployed people, particularly women.

For further legislative updates, please visit www.democrats.org/women.   You can also provide feedback through the WLF Blog.   We look forward to hearing from you.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"The common thread of Democratic history, from Thomas Jefferson to Bill Clinton, has been an abiding faith in the judgment of hardworking American families, and a commitment to helping the excluded, the disenfranchised and the poor strengthen our nation by earning themselves a piece of the American Dream. We remember that this great land was sculpted by immigrants and slaves, their children and grandchildren." - The Late Ron Brown, former Chairman of the Democratic Party.

WISHING YOU PEACE AND WELL-BEING IN THE NEW YEAR
