SPOTLIGHT AND COMMENTARY ON THE “MR JONES” VIDEO Think you know the entire story about the Mr Jones video? Find out from Charles Gillingham, Counting Crows piano and accordion player, what the original video concept was. “With Mr. Jones, the most important thing I wanted the video to communicate was the tragedy and charm of wanting to be famous when it's clearly out of your reach -- the naive courage of having a dream that survives despite all evidence to the contrary. The director pitched to us something that seemed like it would work: there would be some strippers working at a club and a band rehearsing in a living room, all wishing they were famous, but clearly with a long way to go. I pictured something like cover of Tom Wait's Small Change -- beautiful losers shut out from success by some obvious flaw that they couldn't see. It felt edgy and ironic and compassionate. I liked it. It was shot in two days, one day for us and one day for the strippers When we got the first cut back, the strippers turned out to be just hollywood starlet hot body eyecandy dancing and shaking their cans. When Adam sings "I wish I was beautiful" (the most tragic line in the song) the screen was filled with someone's ass in a miniskirt swinging to the beat, accenting the syllables, left-right, BEAU-ti-iFUL. It horrified me -- to tell you the truth, I nearly cried. Cheesecake had no place in my vision of the band. I hated the sexy hair-band videos that were popular back then and I was disgusted at the thought that were making one. In those days I felt very religious about being an artist and that music was about commitment and emotion and honesty. But Adam himself went in and sat with the editor and the director and they cut out nearly everything until all that was left was the band playing and a couple of images, which is okay I suppose but is hardly what it could have ! been. The good news is that millions of people were captivated by that video, maybe because it was just the band playing.”
