MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

Like me, you are no doubt concerned with the continuing increase in the price of gasoline. Just as there is not just one simple explanation for rising fuel costs, there is no silver bullet solution either. For our part, Democrats in Congress continue to push for measures we have passed in the House but have been met with resistance from the White House, such as cracking down on price gouging, holding OPEC accountable for price fixing, and repealing subsidies to the Big 5 oil companies, who this week reported yet another quarter of multi-billion dollar profits.

Meanwhile, the IRS began sending out Recovery Rebates this week to those who used the government's e-file to submit their 2007 federal tax forms. Rebates will continue to be issued over the next couple months.

In the coming weeks, the House will consider legislation to add new conservation funding for the Chesapeake Bay and to help homeowners facing foreclosure. The funding for the Bay will be included in the federal Farm Bill that sets national policy for food and agriculture. The housing legislation will help more than one million American homeowners avoid foreclosure, others buy new ones, and businesses and communities hurt by this crisis not only recover, but also create new jobs.

Housing Foreclosure Prevention Workshop. With increasing distress over the slumping housing market and mounting foreclosures, I have announced that I will host a free foreclosure prevention workshop to brief homeowners on their financing options and assist them in taking steps to avoid foreclosure. The workshop will be on Friday, May 9, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees located at 3090 Crain Highway in Waldorf, MD. If you or someone you know is worried about or facing foreclosure, please consider attending this free workshop. For more information, visit hoyer.house.gov.

As always, thank you for allowing me to share this update with you. If there is anything you wish to share with me or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer

Update from U.S. Senator John Cornyn

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Dear Phillip,

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Lubbock on Saturday, April 19, to
see firsthand the work in progress of the North & East Lubbock
Community Development Corporation (NELCDC) to rejuvenate the region with
economic growth and development. Click here for more photos.Over the last two weeks, I had the opportunity to speak with many Texans across our great State including folks in Lubbock, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley.

It's clear that the high price of gasoline tops the list of economic concerns facing Texas families. Despite the recent positive news that the Texas economy is among the strongest in the 50 states, skyrocketing gas prices are hitting Texas families hard, particularly as the summer travel season approaches.

Too many Texas families are now paying the price for inaction by the Congress. That is unacceptable. Congress can and should take immediate action to improve both our security and our economy by increasing American-based energy production – from exploring ANWR and the Outer Continental Shelf to increasing American refining capacity. Unfortunately, some of my colleagues have continually obstructed any effort to step-up domestic energy production – dating back to President Clinton's veto to stop such development in ANWR, which would have made available nearly 1,000,000 barrels of oil a day.

Members of Congress on a bipartisan basis must work together to try to bring some of these policies to the floor as soon as possible, without a moment of unnecessary delay. I am working hard to see this action through.

Another area that I have been working hard on concerns the care and treatment of our Veterans. Texas is the proud home of roughly 1.6 million U.S. Veterans, and we have a solemn obligation to ensure that each one of them receives the important benefits they have earned and deserve. This week I was proud to co-sponsor the Enhancement of Recruitment, Retention, and Readjustment through Education Act, S. 2938, which will strengthen the existing Montgomery G.I. Bill to improve benefits for active duty service members, veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve.

I was also proud to help pass the Veterans' Benefits Enhancement Act, S. 1315, which contains a number of key reforms to VA benefits programs. This legislation included new housing benefits for our wounded warriors and their families which was the direct result of conversations I had with wounded soldiers and their families at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Finally, on a related note, one of our Texas heroes and Veterans was honored on Capitol Hill last week. I was proud to join President Bush and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in presenting Dr. Michael DeBakey with the Congressional Gold Medal. During World War II, Dr. DeBakey helped develop the concept of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H.) units, which saved thousands of lives during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He later became head of surgery at the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston in 1948, and helped lead the Texas Medical Center to the position of international prominence it enjoys today.

On Sautrday, April 19th, Senator Cornyn threw out the
first pitch for the Texas Tech vs. Kansas State baseball game. Click
here for more photos!Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts with you on some of the issues currently before the Congress. I hope you will take a moment to read through some of the other issues I have spoken out on over the last two weeks and as always, please share any thoughts you have by clicking here.

For more information on these and other topics, go directly to my Web site. To receive additional updates, please select the issues that interest you listed on the right. It's an honor to serve you in the United States Senate.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator John Cornyn

Texas-Sized Tracks: George's sharp-eyed discovery of what turned out to be dinosaur footprints helped open an exciting chapter in Texas and U.S. natural history. Much later, researchers from across the country poured into the area southwest of Fort Worth, putting Glen Rose at the center of the world of paleontology. This area today is home to Dinosaur Valley State Park. At this sprawling preserve, a National Natural Landmark, visitors can see dinosaur tracks as large as three feet long by two feet wide. This tranquil terrain along the Paluxy River, once home to the Caddo and Tonkawa tribes, today differs markedly from the era when dinosaurs roamed...

Trade boosts Texas prosperity, national security: Texans work hard and efficiently, and what we produce is highly valued around the globe. In the early days of Texas statehood, cotton was king, and most of it was exported to mills abroad. Then came the Texas cowboy and cattle drive era, the beginning of our international beef industry. Today, Texas leads all states in exports of goods, ranging from agricultural products to computer and electronic equipment, and we don't do badly in services—such as gas and oil technology. Exports are the difference between sustainability and prosperity for our agriculture sector—they've helped keep farms and ranches thriving across our state. Some 23 percent of our agricultural production is sent abroad. That includes two-thirds of our cotton crop (it's still our biggest money-maker), two-thirds of our rice, one-third of our peanuts and virtually every bushel of wheat...

AAPI Democrat May 2008

If there is one lesson we've learned during the Democratic primary process, it is the important role the delegates play. The focus seems to be on the all-important delegate count. As the candidates tally their delegate totals, state parties across the country are in various stages of the delegate selection process, as governed by their state delegate selection plans.

Here is where you come in. And just in time to kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! To ensure diversity among the delegates, each state has set affirmative action goals as part of its delegate selection plan. One way states meet their affirmative action goals is through the at-large delegate appointment process. We have a number of states whose filing deadlines for at-large appointments are coming up in May and June. On behalf of DNC's Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Caucus, I would like to encourage you to contact your state party about applying for an at-large appointment, to ensure that your state meets its goal for APIA delegates.

Democrats are turning out in record numbers, and this promises to be an historic convention. We wanted to get this information out to you now, as a number of deadlines are coming up this month. We will be highlighting more APA Heritage Month events featuring Governor Dean and Congressman Honda in our next edition of The AAPI Democrat, so stay tuned!

'CONVENTION 101' GOES ONLINE AT DEMCONVENTION.COM

New Online Content Detailing Rules and Mechanics of the Nomination Process to Serve as Go-To Resource for Information on Party Business at Core of Convention

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) launched "Convention 101," a series of new web pages at DemConvention.com detailing the rules and mechanics governing the Democratic Party's nomination process. The extensive online content also includes an inside look at much of the Party business conducted at each and every Democratic National Convention. The 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held August 25-28, 2008 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo. "Not only will our Convention be technically flawless, but the rules and Party business conducted in the lead-up to and during Convention week will be open, orderly and credible," said Leah D. Daughtry, CEO of the DNCC. "DemConvention.com will be a tremendous resource for those interested in the significant amount of Party business that sits at the core of every Convention."

Laid out as a series of educational lessons, "Convention 101" includes information on the extensive planning process that takes place in advance of the Convention and what happens and when during the four-day event. The planning process, including the role of the prestigious Standing Committees, is now outlined in detail under "Lesson 1: Convention Lead-Up" on the site. As Convention participants are certified by Alice Germond, Secretary of the Democratic National Committee, the names of each participant to the 2008 Convention will be posted to this section of the site. This section will also indicate the presidential candidate to whom pledged delegates are pledged.

Convention week itself is explained under "Lesson 2: At the Convention" and includes a typical day in the life of a delegate, how and when pledged and unpledged delegates cast their votes and the role alternate delegates play in the event. The section also outlines the requirements necessary to secure the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

The Democratic National Convention is expected to pump an estimated $160 million into the Denver area's economy and draw as many as of 50,000 visitors to the region.

SENATE PASSES VETERANS BENEFITS ENHANCEMENT ACT OF 2007
Comprehensive bill expands support for disabled veterans, job training, and provides historic Filipino veterans equity

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, elatedly applauded his colleagues in the Senate for passing S. 1315, the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 by a vote of 96 to 1. Prior to voting on final passage of the bill, the Senate debated an amendment to remove a provision providing a limited pension for Filipino World War II veterans residing in the Philippines. This amendment was defeated by a vote of 56 to 41, with Akaka leading the charge for the Filipino veterans' pension.

"The Filipino veterans of World War II fought bravely under U.S. military command, helping us win the war only to lose their veteran status by an Act of Congress. I commend my colleagues for supporting those veterans who stood with us," said Akaka. "This bill makes needed improvements to veterans' benefits by expanding and increasing support for veterans, their families, and their survivors. I urge my colleagues in the House to act swiftly on this much needed bill."

This comprehensive, budget-neutral omnibus veterans' benefits bill was approved by the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs last June and reported to the full Senate last August.

The Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 would provide a veterans' pension to Filipino veterans of World War II residing in the U.S. and in the Philippines. Under the proposed bill, veterans residing in the Philippines would receive a smaller pension than those residing in the U.S., to account for differences in cost-of-living in the two countries.

The Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 also includes a multitude of improvements to veterans' benefits, including provisions to:

  • Establish a new program of insurance for service-connected disabled veterans;
  • Expand eligibility for retroactive benefits from traumatic injury protection coverage under Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance;
  • Increase the maximum amount of Veterans' Mortgage Life Insurance that a service-connected disabled veteran may purchase;
  • Provide individuals with severe burn injuries specially adapted housing benefits; and
  • Extend for two years the monthly educational assistance allowance for apprenticeship or other on-the-job training

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives.

Devastating new Iraq ad

Yesterday, Governor Dean sent around our second national television ad.

It's one of the most powerful television spots Americans will see this year. It's simple, and it's brutally honest. It rocked the McCain campaign, because they know they'll spend the every day through November dealing with the fallout.

This is the ad the Republican National Committee is working around the clock to stop, even threatening legal action against television stations that air this spot. That's how worried about it they are.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now, and send it to everyone you know:

http://www.democrats.org/IraqAd

We can't afford to let-up.

Watch the ad, and make a contribution to help us stay on the air by tomorrow, April 30.

The Democratic Party

Dear PHILLIP,

Watch our new ad on John McCain and IraqJohn McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years. He's said it, and it's on tape.

But his campaign hates that he was caught. They've viciously attacked anyone who reminded the American people that he said it, including me. They've said that those who reference the 100 years comments are "deliberately misleading voters."

So we've taken John McCain's own words -- video of him saying that 100 years would be "fine with me" -- and made a TV ad. There's no confusion, no distortion, no misleading -- it's John McCain, on tape, for voters to judge on their own.

It's one of the most powerful political ads I've ever seen. It's devastating -- and the McCain campaign will spend the rest of the election trying to fight it.

You can watch it here:

http://www.democrats.org/IraqAd

This is our second ad of the presidential race. Last week I sent you the first -- another powerful ad about the economy.

But we're not relying on television ads to win back the White House. We're organizing everywhere -- including District of Columbia -- and we have been for three years. We've invested heavily in the infrastructure that Barack or Hillary will need when the nomination is settled.

All of it -- from the new Iraq ad to the organizers in places like Ohio, Colorado, and Oregon -- costs money, and we need your help.

The McCain campaign thinks they're getting ahead. Senior McCain adviser Mark Salter recently said that Democrats should "take their time -- don't rush" when asked about our primary.

I think the race has been healthy -- we've had record turnout and thousands of new voters in states across the country. The excitement is unprecedented, and we'll have a fantastic nominee soon. But we have to run against John McCain now -- we can't afford to wait.

Make a contribution to help show the voters where John McCain stands on Iraq, and fund the organizers who are laying the ground work for Hillary or Barack:

http://www.democrats.org/IraqAd

Even if you can't contribute, make sure you send this ad to your friends and family. Every voter in the country deserves to see John McCain in his own words.

100 years may be fine with him, but it's not with the rest of us.

Thanks for your support,

Howard Dean
