MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER
Like me, you are no doubt concerned with the continuing increase in the price of gasoline. Just as there is not just one simple explanation for rising fuel costs, there is no silver bullet solution either. For our part, Democrats in Congress continue to push for measures we have passed in the House but have been met with resistance from the White House, such as cracking down on price gouging, holding OPEC accountable for price fixing, and repealing subsidies to the Big 5 oil companies, who this week reported yet another quarter of multi-billion dollar profits.
Meanwhile, the IRS began sending out Recovery Rebates this week to those who used the government's e-file to submit their 2007 federal tax forms. Rebates will continue to be issued over the next couple months.
In the coming weeks, the House will consider legislation to add new conservation funding for the Chesapeake Bay and to help homeowners facing foreclosure. The funding for the Bay will be included in the federal Farm Bill that sets national policy for food and agriculture. The housing legislation will help more than one million American homeowners avoid foreclosure, others buy new ones, and businesses and communities hurt by this crisis not only recover, but also create new jobs.
Housing Foreclosure Prevention Workshop. With increasing distress over the slumping housing market and mounting foreclosures, I have announced that I will host a free foreclosure prevention workshop to brief homeowners on their financing options and assist them in taking steps to avoid foreclosure. The workshop will be on Friday, May 9, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees located at 3090 Crain Highway in Waldorf, MD. If you or someone you know is worried about or facing foreclosure, please consider attending this free workshop. For more information, visit hoyer.house.gov.
As always, thank you for allowing me to share this update with you. If there is anything you wish to share with me or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
