Recently I was in Washington D.C. and was lucky enough to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. When I mentioned Jumpstart, she responded by saying, "Oh yes, I know Jumpstart." Her simple statement thrilled me because it is a symbol that all of our hard work is paying off. Leaders in the highest level of government are recognizing the importance of Jumpstart's accomplishments and their knowledge of national service organizations like Jumpstart are helping to fuel initiatives like United We Serve, a program launched this past Monday by President Barack Obama and the First Lady, calling upon all Americans to serve this summer.
We are also celebrating the end of the school year for our preschool children and our Corps members. Through their time together, preschool children are discovering new skills like writing the letters of their first name and understanding that 'cat' rhymes with 'bat'. At the same time, the adults who work with them in the classroom are uncovering their passion for teaching and enthusiasm for national service.
I am happy that while the school year ends, a summer begins. A summer of opportunities for all of us to join in service to our country.
