At the core of schizophrenia are chronic cognitive deficits that impede recovery long after the hallucinations and delusions are under control. NIMH is currently investigating potential pharmacological treatments for the cognitive disorders related to schizophrenia.
In this lecture, we hope that you will learn about:
- The specific cognitive disturbances associated with schizophrenia
- The techniques used to understand the neurobiology of cognition
- Risk genes that influence pathways in the brain related to cognition
- The investigation of pharmacological treatments for cognitive disorders related to schizophrenia
- The opinions of NIMH doctors regarding genetics, diagnosis, and the treatment of schizophrenia
An "Ask the Doctor" panel discussion will follow the lecture.

National Institute of Mental Health is an approved sponsor of the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for continuing education credits for licensed social workers in Maryland.
