It's always a pleasure to meet with old friends, and one of TENAC's best friends is the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. AFL-CIO.  A little over a year ago, their distinguished president, Josh Williams, spoke to our Board of Directors about some of the most pressing issues facing working people this city.  Not surprising, many of them are the same concerns of  D.C. tenants in general, and TENAC in particular.

At the February TENAC Board Meeting, we were pleased to welcome Rick Powell, Political Coordinator of the AFL-CIO's Metropolitan Washington Council, who spoke of mutual concerns, especially the importance of sympathetic persons serving on key District boards and commissions, such as the Rental Housing Commission and the Public Service Commission.  Mr. Powell recommended an alliance between the Federation and TENAC, and we think that is a great idea. We have often adopted the labor credo, "In Unity There is Strength."  If two-thirds of the city are tenants, an equal number are workers.  If there was ever a time for collaboration to save rent control, jobs, civil and economic rights, that time is now.  Fortunately, with President Barack Obama in the White House, tenants and working people both have a champion.

Looking at just one issue, who can argue with the concept of a "livable wage," especially in the wake of the Bush Depression?  Tenants in this city, like working people, have been put through the economic wringer.  Acute hardships face all of us in terms of employment, affordable housing, food prices, bankruptcies, and on and on.  One of the most acute problems is the threat to pensions and retirement income, of key importance to the large number of low-income and fixed-income tenants in D.C.  Let us unite to help solve these problems!
