Next Tuesday marks an historic day as millions will gather to celebrate the swearing-in of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. I look forward to working with the President-elect and serving the people of Maryland's Fifth Congressional District in the 111th Congress as we address the challenges facing our nation. As we embark on this new era, the most pressing issue on our agenda is responding to the economic crisis that has led to severe job loss and a downturn affecting almost all Americans. This week, the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled an economic recovery plan to create and save 3 million jobs and strengthen our economy both now and in the long-term. This is an important bill needed to put people back to work in our state and in our country and to lift our economy out of this recession.
I also wanted to take a moment to update you on recent action Congress has taken that will impact the lives of many children in Maryland and across the country. On January 14, the House passed legislation to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which provides health care for uninsured, low-income children who do not qualify for Medicaid. The bill will expand the program to include more than 11 million children nationwide, including an additional 73,800 children in Maryland on top of the 137,000 who are currently enrolled.

House Passes SCHIP Bill to Expand Children's Health Care for Low-Income Maryland Children
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer spoke on the House Floor in support of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which will expand the program to include more than 11 million children nationwide. Maryland currently has 132,887 enrolled in the program.
