ARROGANT MAJORITY

CONFIRMS ARROGANT MAN

For Immediate Release: November 24, 2008

For Information: Jim McGrath (202) 387-1893

The 7-5 vote confirming Peter Nickles as D.C. Attorney General, with Chairman Gray breaking a tie vote in Nickles's favor, was a huge disappointment, and a sure sign of business as usual at the Council.  So what's new you ask?  What's new is that every vote for Nickles was cast by a councilmember endorsed in the past by TENAC for office, re-election or for higher office.  The same could be said in for all those in opposition, except for Councilmember Cheh, perhaps the most eloquent voice opposing Mr. Nickles.  TENAC did not endorse Ms. Cheh for Council.  That was a mistake.  We will not make it again.

Nickles, posing as a "sweep the rascals out reformer", went after a handful of slumlords in the District and that is commendable.  His arrogant dismissal of virtually all the major calamities in rental housing and hardships borne by tenants, by his Olympian dictate "send me a memo," which is legalese for "get lost," does not a tenant "hero" make, however.  We await to hear Mr. Nickles's response to longstanding tenant grievances at buildings like the Norwood, 4000 Massachusetts Avenue, Kennedy-Warren, Dorchester House, Somerset House, New Capitol Park Towers, Marbury Plaza, the homeless crisis at Franklin Shelter, and the condominium conversion craze killing rent control in the District, before we render final judgment on Mr. Nickles, but the omens are not promising in wake of the Council vote.
