[PsychRights] An Apology and An Update

Hi All,

Apology.  Somehow our listserver was compromised even though it is password protected and some spams got out.  I think I've stopped it and profusely apologize for the inconvenience.  We try to keep the number of e-mails to this list very small so it is particularly galling.

Update.  The Alaska Supreme Court did not stop the forced drugging of Mr. Bigley this time so he is now being loaded up with Risperdal.   I have tried to figure out what I might have done differently that might have made a difference and while I can think of things I probably should have done differently, I am not sure it would have changed the result.

What happened is that since the Supreme Court issued the stay in May, Mr. Bigley had caused a lot of consternation in the community, including multiple arrests for trespass, referrals to the hospital and immediate discharges.   This was exactly what we predicted would happen without the community supports we had asked the Supreme Court to order on an expedited basis.  Well, the Supreme Court granted expedited consideration, but that still doesn't mean very fast.  In fact we just had the oral argument on that last Tuesday.  The hospital came in and portrayed Mr. Bigley's difficulties as being caused by him not being drugged, the trial court bought it, and issued a very sharp opinion that Mr. Bigley should be drugged now.  I think that ultimately convinced the Supreme Court, although one never knows.

It is still possible that we will win the appeal of the May forced drugging decision, but I am not encouraged.  I wouldn't expect a decision in less than three months.
