Do you remember the 1994 elections? Despite a popular Democratic president in office, Republicans still managed to seize control of the House and Senate - a bloc they held until 2006. During President Clinton's remaining six years in office, he ran into constant roadblocks from the Republican majority in Congress.
And now, they're at it again. Republican operative and chief Bush strategist Karl Rove said it himself, when he revealed to Newsweek magazine the formula for rebuilding the party (Nov 24, 2008):
"The GOP can have a better-than-average 2010, but only if it recruits strong candidates. Their cultivation starts now. States remain our best source of presidential contenders and new ideas…"
We can't let history repeat itself in 2010. That's why, just days after our November '08 victories, we set our sights on state and local races in 2009, 2010, 2011 and beyond. We're committed to building a strong progressive base from the grassroots up - a base that's too strong to fall to conservative attempts to seize power. We've already lined up nearly 100 prospective candidates for 2009 elections.
We're determined to stay one step ahead of the Republican recruitment machine. That's why we need your support now - this December - to meet immediate recruitment and candidate filing deadlines. We're recruiting now and through the holidays to fill the progressive pipeline with great new leaders - leaders who'll start at the local level and work their way up the ballot.
