Where could GOP vote suppression tactics flip the outcome on Election Day? Based on the state-level "poll of poll" survey averages reported at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/#data by RealClearPolitics, the following is evident (as of 5 a.m. EDT on October 27, 2008): There are now six toss-up states (Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana and Montana) and six "leaning states" (Colorado, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia and New Mexico). Of these John McCain is leading to some extent in three (Montana, West Virginia and Georgia). Of the remaining nine – over half (5) have Obama ahead by 3.3 percent or less, with razor-thin leads of just 1 percent or less in three states: North Carolina (1 percent): Missouri (1 percent); and Indiana (0.5 percent). Thus, Obama is leading in over half of key toss-up and leaning states by roughly the margin of error or less in the typical poll (3-4 percent). The 69 electoral votes balanced on this knife edge account for more than one in four of the 270 needed to win the White House in the Electoral College. Obama's reported lead of just 2.2 percent in Florida leaves his campaign particularly vulnerable to GOP vote manipulation efforts in the state that was synonymous with the GOP theft of the 2000 election in which Al Gore actually won the popular vote and was still denied the White House.
