Dear Friend:
Earlier this summer, I helped organize a bipartisan coalition of 10 senators - five Democrats and five Republicans - to find a solution to skyrocketing fuel prices while reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Recently, our 'Gang of 10' announced the comprehensive New Energy Reform Act of 2008, - or New Era bill - which has a long-term goal of moving 85 percent of the nation's vehicles to fuels other than gasoline and diesel. It also includes new investment in conservation, efficiency and the development of alternative fuels. To ease gas prices in the short term, the proposal increases domestic production through measures like responsible offshore drilling.
Our proposal is gaining momentum. This summer I've been crisscrossing North Dakota to share the details of our plan. I'm happy to report that it has received overwhelming support. Two weeks ago, six additional senators announced support for the New Era bill and we expect more to join as early as this week. And today, the National Farmers Union joined me to push for a solution to our energy challenge.
We all know that high gas and diesel prices are putting an enormous strain on North Dakota's families, farmers, and ranchers. Whether it's the cost of diesel for farm trucks and tractors, or simply filling the tank of the family car, the cost of gas is suffocating our rural economy. Congress must act quickly to deliver the short term relief our families and farmers need, and ensure our long-term economic security.
At our group's urging, Senate leadership has agreed to hold an energy summit this Friday. I am hopeful that this summit and the New Era compromise bill will move us past political posturing and on to the hard work of securing our energy independence.
