Join Senator Conrad in Saluting North Dakota's Veterans

Dear Friend:

I am pleased to announce that the Senate today adopted a federal budget I helped write that increases veterans' funding by more than $3 billion over the President's budget proposal.

With new veterans entering the VA system every day due to the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, it was critical we write a budget that addresses the growing needs of those veterans. The increased funding in the Congressional budget will significantly help the Veterans Administration meet the health care needs of soldiers returning home from the Middle East.

I believe that we best honor our veterans by caring for those who return home. This budget is an important step toward fulfilling America's promise to its veterans.

I will be in North Dakota later this week to detail the veterans-related budget provisions at the VFW Convention in Dickinson and at the groundbreaking for the new Veterans Home in Lisbon.

Constructing a new Veterans Home to replace the aging and out-of-date facility we currently have is one way we honor the service of our veterans.

Working with the Congressional delegation, I secured a priority listing for federal funds for the Lisbon project through the VA State Home Grant program. The new 150-bed facility is scheduled to open in 2010.

If you are in the area, I encourage you to join Senator Dorgan and me Saturday, June 7, at 1:30 in Lisbon for this important event. The groundbreaking will be held at 1400 Rose St. in Lisbon.

I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

KENT CONRAD
United States Senator
