MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER
Like many Marylanders, I am concerned about the troubled economy. Americans are now facing higher costs for basic necessities, unemployment is up, millions of families have lost their homes or value in their homes due to the housing crisis and 7 million more Americans are uninsured.
These grim conditions are further proof that the current Administration's misguided economic policies have failed the American people by weakening our economy and leaving hundreds of thousands of people looking for work and struggling to make ends meet.
The new majority in Congress has made strengthening our economy our top priority. After passing an economic stimulus that sent checks to 130 million Americans, we are aggressively moving forward with legislation that will provide relief and help reinvigorate our economy.
With gas prices continuing to rise, Congress has taken action to ease the pain at the pump with legislation to suspend the filling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve starting June 30. We are also close to finalizing a measure to address the housing crisis, which has been a drag on the overall economy. This week, we passed a federal budget that invests in areas that will grow our economy, provide middle-class tax cuts, and work to balance the budget in five years. And soon, we hope to consider in the House legislation extending unemployment insurance benefits for the long-term jobless.
Looking for a fun activity this summer? Those of us fortunate to live in this region have been blessed with a multitude of magnificent natural resources, not the least of which is our nation's largest estuary the Chesapeake Bay. This week, Congress approved legislation to continue the federal commitment to the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Water Trails Network grant program, which ties together more than 156 museums, state parks, wildlife refuges, Indian reservations, water trails, and other significant sites in six states and the District of Columbia. Information on all Network sites as well as events and activities throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed is available at www.baygateways.net.
As always, thank you for allowing me to share this update with you. If there is anything you wish to share with me or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
