Meeting the needs of North Dakota's veterans

Dear Friend,

At a Senate Budget Committee field hearing I chaired last week in Bismarck, veterans from across North Dakota testified to the quality of health care delivered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. As someone concerned about the care our veterans receive, I wanted to update you on the results of that hearing.

First, I want to thank all those leaders who took part in the hearing, including: Harvey Peterson, the State Commander of the American Legion, Steve Frojen, the State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Hanson, a National Legislative Committee Member of the VFW, Lyle Schuchard, the State Commander for the AMVETS and Gene Kouba, the State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans.

Each testified to the improvements in health care that have been made, but cautioned that much more needs to be done to meet the growing and diverse health care needs of our nation's veterans.

I particularly appreciated the testimony of DAV National Service Officer Greg Seurer, who said that additional funding included in the budget we passed last year resulted in more services provided locally for North Dakota veterans. In other words, our veterans have been able to stay closer to home while receiving the quality care they deserve.

Still, with a new and growing generation of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, we have an obligation to ensure that the funding is there in the budget to care for our wounded warriors.

Sincerely,

KENT CONRAD
United States Senate
