MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER
The bleak news about the economy continues to mount as Marylanders are feeling the negative impact of President Bush's failed economic policies and the extraordinary costs of our continuing commitment in Iraq. Americans are facing higher costs for basic necessities, unemployment is up, millions of Americans have lost their homes or value in their homes due to the housing crisis, and gas prices have hit an all time high. This week, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan said we are "in the throes of a recession."
During these difficult times, the New Direction Congress continues to work to stimulate the economy and assist families struggling in this economy. Working in a bipartisan way, we have already enacted an economic stimulus package that will provide relief to families in need, providing Recovery Rebates starting next month.
Last week, the House Democratic leadership called on President Bush to again work in a bipartisan manner on a second economic package that will help get our economy back on track, create jobs, and speed assistance to families struggling to make ends meet.
Congress is also working to pass legislation t to address the widespread troubles in the housing market. Legislation moving through the House will help about 1.5 million American homeowners avoid foreclosure, help others buy new ones, and help businesses and communities hurt by this crisis not only recover, but also create new jobs. This is one of Congress' top priorities, and it is my hope that this legislation will be up for a vote before the end of the month.
