@Stake: Republicans Running for the Hills

@Stake Brought To You By The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

Dear Phillip,

Thank you for supporting our people-powered campaign for change. Your generous support has put us in a great position to give America the two things we need the most this year -- a Democratic President and a strong Democratic Majority. We can't thank you enough.

Despite our strong position, we're up against some daunting challenges this year. We knew the Republicans wouldn't go down without a fight. One of the best ways we can stay ready for the tough fight that lies ahead is by keeping you, our most dedicated grassroots supporters, informed of what's happening. That's why the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is pleased to bring you the next edition of @Stake, a collection of the latest breaking news of what's at stake.

Some of the challenges:

House Democrats Feel the Wind at their Backs
"One of the concerns we had at the very beginning of the cycle... was that, when you come off a wave election, historically you lose seats in the following election," Chairman Chris Van Hollen said. "Losing two or three seats would be a victory, historically." [Washington Post; February 1, 2008]

Van Hollen concerned about GOP 527 groups
"Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) signaled concern about the prospect of GOP-aligned 527 groups pouring money into contested races, according to a memo he wrote to House Democrats today." [Politico; December 12 2007]

...and some of the good news: Retirements

GOP exodus in House bodes ill for Fall success.
"A swelling exodus of senior Republican incumbents from the House, worsened by a persistent disadvantage in campaign money, threatens to cripple Republican efforts to topple the Democratic majority in November." [NY Times; January 31, 2008]

Stay tuned for future editions of @ Stake for the latest news and headlines from the campaign trail. Thank you again for driving our people-powered movement to change the direction of our country.

Brandon English, DCCC
