Energy Information Administration Country Analysis Brief on Iran, October 2007 (14 pages, PDF) "Iran is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and ranks amongst the world's top three holders of proven oil and natural gas reserves. Iran is OPEC's second-largest exporter after Saudi Arabia, and is the fourth-largest exporter of crude oil globally after Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Norway. Natural gas accounts for half of Iran's total domestic energy consumption, while the remaining half is predominately oil consumption. * Hearing on Private Security Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan
On October 2, 2007, the House Oversight Committee ...[held] a hearing to examine the use of private security contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • "Previously undisclosed information reveals (1) Blackwater has engaged in 195 "escalation of force" incidents since 2005, an average of 1.4 per week, including over 160 incidents in which Blackwater forces fired first; (2) after a drunken Blackwater contractor shot the guard of the Iraqi Vice President, the State Department allowed the contractor to leave Iraq and advised Blackwater on the size of the payment needed "to help them resolve this"; and (3) Blackwater, which has received over $1 billion in federal contracts since 2001, is charging the federal government over $1,200 per day for each "protective security specialist" employed by the company."

  • Find a Federal Government Job: You can now search for jobs directly from USA.gov. In the Search Federal Jobs box, enter keywords or a location and you'll quickly find job announcements from the federal government.
  • Find a Federal Recreation Area: In USA.gov's Recreation Area Search box, enter keywords—such as camping, hiking, and fishing—and the state, and you'll find recreation opportunities on federal lands.
