The next generation

The Democratic Party
Rosen Fund

Dear Friends,

Every summer, thousands of interns come to Washington, D.C. to see how our government works first-hand. The DNC is no different -- this summer, we have over 40 college-age interns working with us from across America who look like America. Most of these young men and women give up summers at home with friends for long hours and no pay just to get closer to the democratic process and the Democratic Party.

But not everyone can afford to take the summer off, move to a big city, and then work for free. You and I both know that a system like that makes it difficult for students from diverse backgrounds to make the trip. The fact is, most people who can't make it to Washington don't need a lot of help -- they just need a little extra support to make it through the summer.

That's why Sam and Edna Rosen set up the Sarah Rosen Fund -- to make sure that our interns look like the rest of America.

The Sarah Rosen fund is a permanent endowment to spin-off investment income so that we can always be sure that our intern program is open to everyone. Can you help support the Sarah Rosen Fund to give these kids a chance?

Sam and Edna's daughter, Sarah Rosen, was a young, smart, dynamic Democratic activist who had worked in a number of campaigns -- sleeping on floors and staying up all night the way many campaign staffers do. In 2005, she was killed in a car accident in rural Kentucky. After the tragedy, her parents and I came to the conclusion that the best way to remember Sarah was to help young people like her do what they love. So the Sarah Rosen Fund was designed to support interns from across the country who would otherwise not be able to afford to live in Washington without getting help.

Know that your contribution now will not only help fund an intern this summer, but because your contribution goes into an endowment, it will fund interns for many summers to come. This is an investment in a diverse group of talented people that will keep the Democratic Party strong after we're both gone.

Internships in Washington are often the best way to a job -- getting your foot in the door means that you'll not only meet people at the top of the business, but that you'll have an opportunity to show them just how hard you're willing to work to make the country a better place.

So far, we've been able to give many people that little boost that makes an internship a reality. These interns are selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants, and they get an offer based on their brains, their talent, and their energy. Whether they have an opportunity to showcase their skills is where you come in. Every semester some interns have to turn us down because they can't afford to work for free. Now we're trying to change that.

Can you help give another intern that little boost?

Diversity isn't just an important part of the Democratic Party, it is the Democratic Party. You can help make sure that the tomorrow's leaders get the opportunity they deserve -- whether they can afford it or not.

Thanks for your support,

Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

P.S. -- I want to share a short note from one of our current interns who was helped by the Sarah Rosen Fund, Renee C. Renee is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in Political Science:

When I started applying for internships in the spring, I didn't know what to expect. I knew I wanted to come to Washington and learn about campaigns, but I also knew that I'd probably have to find a side job so I could pay my rent (rent in D.C. is crazy). Since most internships are full-time, this was going to be even harder. When the DNC called and offered me my internship, I was thrilled, but also a little worried. Fortunately, they were able to help me out with a small stipend that meant that I could work full-time and see every aspect of the Party: from communications to fundraising to our field operation.

It was a great relief for my parents who were going to borrow lots of money to help me pay for living expenses. The generosity of those behind the scholarship continues to motivate me to work hard for the Party and give back to the country. I'm just very grateful to have worked with the DNC.

Can you help more students like Renee?
