* FBI Releases its 2006 Crime Statistics
Press release: "For the second consecutive year, the estimated number of violent crimes in the nation increased, and for the fourth year in a row, the estimated number of property crimes decreased. According to statistics released today by the FBI, the estimated volume of violent crime increased 1.9 percent, and the estimated volume of property crime decreased 1.9 percent in 2006 when compared with 2005 figures. The estimated rate of violent crime was 473.5 occurrences per 100,000 inhabitants (a 1.0-percent increase when the 2006 and 2005 rates were compared), and the estimated rate of property crime was 3,334.5 per 100,000 inhabitants (a 2.8-percent decline). The FBI presented these data today in the 2006 edition of Crime in the United States, a statistical compilation of offense and arrest data as reported by law enforcement agencies throughout the nation."

Press release: "Committee on Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science and Technology Chairman James R. Langevin (D-RI) sent a letter on Friday to Richard L. Skinner, Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security to request an investigation into cyber attacks on the Department initiated by foreign entities and relating to incompetent and possibly illegal activity by the contractor charged with maintaining security on its networks.     Press release: "Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced today that his office is investigating Facebook over representations the company makes about safety measures in place on its website. In a letter accompanying a subpoena for documents, Cuomo warned the company that a preliminary review conducted by his office revealed significant defects in the site's safety controls and the company's response to complaints - deficiencies that stand in contrast to the reassuring statements made on the website and by company officials."

    "Today, Sunlight and Taxpayers for Common Sense launched EarmarkWatch.org, a user-friendly, online investigative tool that lets citizens connect the dots between lawmakers, lobbyists, campaign contributors and earmarks, plus share info and comments on whether earmarks meet pressing needs, pay off political contributors, or are simply pure pork.
