On August 24 and 25, the Fenty cabinet joined school employees and community members to paint and beautify each school building. Read more. | | | Back in Business: Eastern Market's 'East Hall' Opens Mayor Fenty joined City Administrator Dan Tangherlini and others to cut the ribbon for the new Eastern Market 'East Hall' building. The East Hall is a temporary structure for merchants and customers to use during the reconstruction of the permanent South Hall building. South Hall burned April 30. Read more. | | | Douglass Bridge Re-Opens Ahead of Schedule The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is open to traffic again, one week ahead of schedule. The bridge, which carries South Capitol Street across the Anacostia River, closed July 6 for renovations. The DC Department of Transportation chose to close the bridge altogether to complete the work more quickly. The project included lowering a segment of the bridge to create a new intersection at South Capitol Street and Potomac Avenue, SE. The Douglass Bridge carries an estimated 77,000 cars daily. Read more. | | | Permits for Small Construction Jobs Now Available Online 'Postcard' construction permits for small jobs are now available online for the first time. Mayor Fenty joined Linda Argo, Director of the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, in launching the new online permit process. Thousands of District homeowners and contractors will no longer need to visit the Permit Center. Read more. | | | Mayor's Citywide Job Fair Draws a Crowd More than 17,000 people visited Mayor Fenty's annual Citywide Job Fair at the Washington Convention Center. The job fair brought together public and private employers in the District for the first time. The DC Department of Human Resources reports that the turnout was higher than expected. Read more. | | | Mark Your Calendars: Car Free Day is September 18 Please join Mayor Fenty, members of the Council of the District of Columbia, the DC Department of Transportation and others for DC Car Free Day September 18. Car Free Day is an opportunity to get to know the District's neighborhoods by walking, biking or taking public transportation. Fewer vehicles in use means cleaner air and less carbon in the atmosphere. CarFree DC is asking participants to register online.
