He has announced his choice of Michelle Rhee as the first schools chancellor, and Allen Lew as Executive Director of the School Facilities Modernization Office. Earlier this month, the Mayor announced the selection of two audit firms to investigate the finances and operations of the public schools. Read more. | | | Voting Rights Bill Passes Senate Committee A bill giving the District its first-ever vote in the House of Representatives is one step closer to becoming law. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs passed the bill with a bipartisan 9-1 vote June 13. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) chairs the committee. The next step is for the entire Senate to consider the legislation. The House passed a similar bill April 19. Read more. | | | Fireworks in the District: Be Safe, Know the Law Mayor Fenty wishes you a safe and happy Independence Day holiday. In the United States, up to 10,000 people are injured while using fireworks each year. Some fireworks are permitted in the District of Columbia, but many are illegal. Any person found using or in possession of illegal fireworks could face penalties of up to $1,000 or arrest. In general, any fireworks or firecrackers that explode such as cherry bombs, roman candles, or floral shells are illegal. The District Government keeps a complete list at dc.gov. Read more. | | | Summer's Here and Pools Are Open Mayor Fenty launched the District's DC Summer Fun program at Langdon Park Community Center in Ward Five. The program includes recreation, employment and educational opportunities for young people while school is out for the summer. All outdoor pools are open daily, and District residents can swim for free with identification. Read more. | | | Mayor Announces New Plan to Tackle Graffiti Faster Mayor Fenty has announced plans to drastically cut the time it takes to remove graffiti from private property. More than half of the graffiti calls to 727-1000 take 31 days or more to complete. The new plan would reduce this time to 8 business days. The Mayor's legislation replaces the current waiver form with a door tag giving a property owner several options, including a free graffiti removal kit. Read more. | | | Mark Your Calendar for Citywide Job Fair August 22 With more vendors, more space and more jobs available to eager job seekers, the DC Department of Human Resources is proud to announce the Third Annual Citywide Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at the Washington Convention Center. DCHR Director Brender L. Gregory says the Washington Convention Center is the ideal location and with the addition of private companies to the event for the first time this year, participants are sure to find jobs that best match their talents and experience.
