On May 21 months ahead of schedule Habitat for Humanity raised the walls on its 1,000th and 1,001st homes in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast. Representatives of 20 Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas were on hand to celebrate. Now, sights are set on the next 1,000 houses. Carters take project to Gulf Coast in 2008 Next spring, Habitat for Humanity will mark the 25th Jimmy Carter Work Project with a new name that honors the commitment of the former president and first lady: the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. The 2008 event will be held in the U.S. Gulf Coast, May 11-16. The weeklong housebuilding event will be held in a broad expanse of the affected Gulf Coast region, where thousands of families are still recovering from hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Desmond Tutu build held in South Africa Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu visited a Habitat for Humanity build site in the Mfuleni community near Cape Town, South Africa, to thank more than 100 volunteers who gathered this week to build 12 homes in partnership with local families for the first "Desmond Tutu Community Build." Habitat for Humanity South Africa has built nearly 1,800 houses, providing shelter in partnership with 8,000 people, bringing people together across racial, economic, cultural and social boundaries.
