Fenty Kicks Off Voting Rights March Events - washingtonpost.com

Fenty Kicks Off Voting Rights March Events - washingtonpost.com: "Fenty Kicks Off Voting Rights March Events The Associated Press Tuesday, April 10, 2007; 2:03 PM Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) is officially starting the countdown to the D.C. Voting Rights March with the unveiling of a new banner over the main entrance of the Wilson Building. The red-and-white banner announces the march for next Monday, which starts at Freedom Plaza." At a press conference today, Fenty urged people to stand up for the District's rights. He said the nation needs to know District residents are Americans, too. Fenty expects thousands to come out, especially since it's an official day off for D.C. schools and city government offices. Monday marks D.C. Emancipation Day, which is a holiday in the city. Council member Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) said when it comes to the need for equal voting representation, District residents "get it," but the rest of the nation does not. Mendelson said the struggle for national visibility is as important as the fight for the vote itself.
