8 days until Victory Do We Sound Redundant? Who Cares, Just Get Out the Vote With just a week to go before Election Day this campaign knows one thing is for sure: We get out the vote and we will win. Every one of us must make sure that we not only vote but we reach out to every family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker and acquaintance and get them to the polls on Election Day. Oh, and make sure they know who will best serve Maryland's future. If you can help us by volunteering on Election Day, please click here. Message of the Day: Education Only one candidate in this race has a plan to fully fund education so that we can have smaller class sizes, invest in early childhood education, emphasize the basics, and put character education in every school. That candidate: Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. And what about Bob? Bob Ehrlich voted for the largest cut in education funding in US history. He voted to slash Head Start and the school lunch and breakfast program. He voted to cut billions of dollars of student loans. And he even voted to abolish the Department of Education. Maybe that's why Maryland's teachers gave Bob Ehrlich a grade of F and Kathleen a grade of A when they endorsed her. The Barnstorming Begins Stop One: The Eastern Shore A full sized bus loaded with dozens of eager volunteers rolled out of campaign headquarters at 6:30 this morning and headed towards the Eastern Shore. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend had to catch up with the Townsend/Larson Express later because she had a great appearance with Don Scott & Marty Bass on Channel 13 (at 6:30 in the morning!) where a relaxed and ready candidate discussed her life and family. Then it was off to breakfast at Aberdeen's New Ideal Diner. 15 minutes later Kathleen graciously accepted the endorsement of the Recreational Fisherman's Alliance and the Cecil County Hunters Association along with a number of noted Maryland Sportsmen. In Chestertown, Democratic Mayor Margo Bailey escorted Kathleen on a walk through charming city streets to meet and talk with a cheering crowd of supporters. That scene repeated itself over and over from the top to the bottom of the Eastern Shore; a rally and lunch at the Talbot County Democratic Headquarters in Easton, an afternoon wave on Main Street in Salisbury and a huge crowd cheered her on in the “Rally in the Valley” at the Old Circuit Court House in Cambridge, near the marker commemorating the historic appearance of President John F. Kennedy. Tomorrow? Day two of the Final Push to Get-Out-The-Vote. If we all match the energy and enthusiasm of Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Admiral Chuck Larson in these last few days, this campaign will be in the bag. IN THE NEWS Embracing the Family Business For Townsend, Politics Was Second, Not Second Nature Read this article By Sue Anne Pressley Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, October 28, 2002; Page A01 She always wanted to do what was right. When her younger brothers and sisters turned a Colorado ski-vacation house into a food-fight battleground, the teenage Kathleen Kennedy Townsend faced her indignant parents and took responsibility for the mess. In her hands, a plan to stage a backyard circus would turn into a fundraiser for her Catholic school. It was no joke, she said, that her childhood nickname was the Nun. "I don't know how to describe her except that she was always just so good," said her younger brother, the former congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II. Townsend emphasizes 'future of our families' Read this article By David Nitkin Sun Staff Originally published October 27, 2002 If Kathleen Kennedy Townsend wins next week's election, she would become Maryland's first female governor, and the first lieutenant governor to succeed his or her boss in modern state history. She'd also become the first Kennedy woman elected in her own right. Today Show Update NBC's Today Show had been scheduled to run a profile on Kathleen this morning. The story was delayed because of the demands of a breaking news story. The story has been rescheduled and is now set to air on Wednesday, October 30 between 7:30 – 8:00am and can be seen in Baltimore on Channel 11(WBAL-TV) and in the Washington area on Channel 4 (WRC-TV).
