EMILY's List President Ellen Malcolm, meeting with reporters over coffee at the Hotel Monaco, said her group sees 2008 as a chance to build on the huge gains already made: a surge of female Democratic House members from 12 in 1988 to 50 today; two new female Democratic U.S. senators elected in 2006; almost 200 new female Democrats elected to state legislatures in 2006; and victories in 20 of the 23 statewide down-ticket races in which the PAC supported candidates in 2006, including California Secretary of State Debra Bowen. 'Women are really moving up at all levels, which really sets the stage for the big enchilada, and we're doing all we can to help Hillary Clinton become the first woman president,' Malcolm said.
