We need your help in your county

The Democratic Party

Dear Friends,

We need your help.

Tens of thousands of Democrats are already members of PartyBuilder, a group of tools on Democrats.org that puts control of the Democratic Party in the hands of people like you in all fifty states.

Yesterday we asked people who already use PartyBuilder to join or create a virtual group to organize their county online. We made great progress, and now many counties have an organized group of Democrats online that are talking to each other, planning events, and strategizing for 2008. Think of it as a digital 50-State Strategy.

Can you sign on and join a group with other Democrats in your county? We talk about a Democratic presence in everywhere -- now this is your chance to make that happen with PartyBuilder.

You can see if there's a group right here:

http://www.democrats.org/groups/search

And if there's not already a group in your county, you can create one right here:

http://www.democrats.org/groups/create

"The ability of our citizens to engage in the political process is only as meaningful as the tools they have to do it."

That's what Governor Dean said when he introduced PartyBuilder a year ago this week, and people across the country have used these powerful tools to support Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.

We know how that worked out -- a historic victory for the Democratic Party -- but it's time to ramp up again for 2008 and beyond. Having this online infrastructure -- in every county of every state -- will be an invaluable resource to the Democratic nominee for President, not to mention every other Democratic campaign in your area.

We're not just talking about the 50-State Strategy -- PartyBuilder is helping make it happen, and we need your help.

Become a part of this network by joining your county's PartyBuilder group...

http://www.democrats.org/groups/search

...or by starting one for other Democrats in your county:

http://www.democrats.org/groups/create

A grassroots effort like PartyBuilder can only work within the Democratic Party.

Republicans rely on a top-down system. For them, the fewer people involved in the political process, the better. That results in the fear-mongering, voter suppression, and politics of exclusion that you've seen from the Republican Party for years.

You're reading this email because you know that's not how politics should work. We're fighting the Republicans' cynical tactics with a truly democratic effort: building the party from the ground up, and asking you to take the lead.

Become part of that effort by creating your county's PartyBuilder group today:

http://www.democrats.org/groups/create

Thanks for everything,

--Josh, Stephanie, Mike, and Kombiz
The DNC's Internet Team

P.S. -- The Democratic presidential candidates have groups on PartyBuilder, many created by grassroots supporters like yourself. You can connect with the candidates and other supporters on PartyBuilder:

http://www.democrats.org/PartyBuilder08

People just like you give the Democratic Party the ability to put organizers on the ground in all 50 states, including yours. We're working to win everywhere, at every level, and your support is vital to taking back the White House in 2008.

* Second Report on Marketing Practices in the Federal Family Education Loan Program
Press release: "Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Chairman of the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a report on the student loan system entitled Second Report on Marketing Practices in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (50 pages, PDF). The report discusses the findings of Chairman Kennedy's investigation of inappropriate marketing practices in the student loan industry."

  • * Closing the Tax Gap
House Report 110-207: Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill, 2008 - Closing the Tax Gap: "According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), taxpayers paid about $1.8 trillion in taxes on time in 2001. Research conducted by the IRS has estimated that the 'tax gap', or the difference between total Federal taxes owed and the tax collections received, was $345 billion for tax year 2001. Once IRS collection and enforcement actions are taken into account, the net tax gap is estimated to be $290 billion. Others have disputed this figure and argued that the actual figure is higher. In addition to the effect of the tax gap on overall Federal resources, the very existence of the tax gap stands contrary to IRS efforts to promote compliance. The Committee agrees with the assessment of the IRS Oversight Board in its most recent annual report that 'the tax gap is an injustice to compliant taxpayers who ultimately are bearing the financial burden of those who do not pay what they owe, whether intentionally or not.' As the IRS National Taxpayer Advocate noted in her annual report this year, the existence of the tax gap effectively amounts to a per-taxpayer 'surtax of more than $2,200 to subsidize noncompliance by others.'"

    * E-Gov Site Helps Consumers Keep Track of Product Recalls
USA.gov: "Keeping track of recalls on toys, cars, and other products can be a challenge, but there are several government resources available to help you. Visit Recalls.gov to find the latest recalls and to search for past recalls. You'll find information from the following sources:
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission – Consumer Products
  • Food and Drug Administration – Food, Medicine, and Cosmetics
  • Department of Agriculture – Meat and Poultry
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – Vehicles and Car Seats
  • Environmental Protection Agency – Pesticides
  • U.S. Coast Guard – Boats

  • Securing, Stabilizing, and Rebuilding Iraq: Iraqi Government Has Not Met Most Legislative, Security, and Economic Benchmarks, GAO-07-1195, September 04, 2007 (PDF, 92 pages): "Our analysis of the 18 legislative, security and economic benchmarks shows that as of August 30, 2007, the Iraqi government met 3, partially met 4, and did not meet 11 of its 18 benchmarks. Overall, key legislation has not been passed, violence remains high, and it is unclear whether the Iraqi government will spend $10 billion in reconstruction funds. These results do not diminish the courageous efforts of coalition forces."

  • * DOJ Summaries of New Decisions in FOIA Cases
New FOIA Post Feature -- Summaries of New Decisions in FOIA Cases, (posted 9/4/2007): "Each year the federal courts issue hundreds of decisions in FOIA cases, addressing all aspects of the law. These decisions shape the way the law is interpreted and applied by the many attorneys and access professionals across the government who handle FOIA requests, administrative appeals, and litigation. To aid those professionals, and to facilitate greater understanding of the FOIA overall, OIP [Office of Informationn and Privacy] will begin publishing summaries of FOIA decisions on a regular basis."

    * Secrecy Report Card 2007: Report Finds Expanded Federal Government Secrecy in 2006
Press release: "Government secrecy saw further expansion last year despite growing public concern, according to a report released today by a coalition of open government advocates. The Secrecy Report Card 2007, produced annually by OpenTheGovernment.org in order to identify trends in public access to information, found a troubling lack of transparency in military procurement, assertions of executive privilege, and expansion of "sensitive" categories of information, among other areas. In 2006, the public's use of the Freedom of Information Act continued to rise. Agency backlogs are significant; the oldest FOIA request in the federal government has now been pending for more than 20 years."

    * Data Track the Expansion of International and U.S. Organic Farming
Economic Research Service: "The consumption of organic food and beverages is concentrated in Europe and the United States, but the production of certified organic products is scattered worldwide. U.S. production and domestic consumption of organic products continues to increase. Organic farming systems rely on ecologically based practices, such as cultural and biological pest management, and virtually exclude the use of synthetic chemicals in crop production and prohibit the use of antibiotics and hormones in livestock production. The international statistics on organic production are compiled by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), based in Germany. ERS has collected data from U.S.-based organic certification groups since 1997 to calculate the extent of certified U.S. organic farmland acreage and livestock. In 2002, USDA made organic certification mandatory and has accredited 55 domestic and 41 foreign groups to certify farmers and handlers to U.S. organic standards."

    * New Center Center Launched on Government Secrecy Headed by Former DOJ Information and Privacy Director
Press release: "The Center on Government Secrecy (CGS) was created in August 2007 as a non-partisan academic center devoted to the study of government openness and secrecy. Established under the auspices of the Program on Law and Government in the Washington College of Law ("WCL"), at American University in Washington, D.C., it stands as the first such center of its kind at any law school in the United States. It operates in conjunction with both the JD and LLM/SJD degree programs at WCL and is designed to afford law students interested in this area of legal specialization the opportunity to gain both scholarly and practical experience, including in the growing field of international transparency. CGS is headed by former Department of Justice Office of Information and Privacy Director Daniel J. A year-by-year pull down menu is available here." [Michael Ravnitzky, Steven Aftergood]

    * Nixon Tapes and Transcripts Now Available Online
"Between 1971 and 1973, President Richard Nixon secretly recorded 3,700 hours of his phone calls and meetings. These recordings were made in the Oval Office (commonly designated by the abbreviation "OVAL"), his hideaway office in the Executive Office Building ("EOB"), the Cabinet Room ("CAB"), Camp David ("CDHW"), and on various White House telephones ("WHT"). Currently, approximately 2,100 hours of these tapes have been declassified, released, and are available to the public. However, neither the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) nor the Nixon Presidential Library has made official transcriptions. Instead, they have left this monumental task--a task that NARA once estimated took 100 hours of staff time to transcribe 1 hour of tape--to researchers. The purpose of this website is to make these transcripts available, side-by-side multiple audio formats, to members of the public who are not able to travel to the National Archives and Records Administration's (NARA) Archives II facility in College Park, Maryland, or to the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, California, to listen to and transcribe the conversations for themselves."

    * EFF Report - RIAA v. The People: Four Years Later
Press release: "In a report released [August 29, 2007]...the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) provides the only comprehensive look at the four-year litigation campaign waged by the RIAA against music fans. The report traces the RIAA campaign from its beginnings in 2003 against a handful of students at Princeton, Rensselaer Polytechnic, and Michigan Tech to the current spate of "pre-litigation settlement" letters being sent to universities nationwide." • * 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation
"The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation has been conducted about every five years since 1955. It provides information on the number of participants in fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching (observing, photographing, and feeding wildlife), and the amount of time and money spent on these activities. The Survey is one of the Nation's most important wildlife recreation databases. It is the only source of comprehensive information on participation and expenditures that is comparable on a state-by-state basis. It is used for estimating the economic impact of wildlife-related recreation for each state; for estimating the value of wildlife resources lost due to pollution or disease such as whirling disease in fish; for use in critical habitat analysis of threatened species; and for preparing environmental impact statements, budgets, and legislative proposals."
