A video note from Gov. Dean

The Democratic Party

Dear Phillip,

Governor Dean has asked me to send along this video message.

Scooter Libby - a former top aide to the President and Vice-President - has been convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in a federal court. Even though the Bush Administration has a long history of steamrolling dissent and dodging accountability, our legal system caught up.

See what Gov. Dean had to say about it here:

http://www.democrats.org/DeanMessage

There are still many problems with this Administration, but it's good that Scooter Libby's crimes have been dealt with.

We've got wounded soldiers suffering in VA hospitals and healthy ones fighting in Iraq. Dealing with those problems should be the focus; it's time for the White House to stop playing politics and get back to work.

Thanks, Tom McMahon

GOP campaign managers slim on details at Harvard - News

GOP campaign managers slim on details at Harvard - News: " Media Credit: Sara Hartman Senior campaign advisers for three major candidates for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination fielded questions last night at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, but many in the audience made up of mostly students said they were disappointed by the answers -- and non-answers -- the top strategists gave. Though strategists for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said their respective candidates support President Bush's current Iraq strategies, they said they were not qualified to comment on audience members' questions about specific war policies -- or on social issues such as AIDS relief in Africa, national healthcare and gay rights. When one student asked McCain campaign adviser Rick Davis about how the candidate feels about being the 'face of Iraq' for the 2008 presidential race, Davis declined to comment about McCain's policies. 'Iraq will be the transcendent issue of our time,' he said. McCain has come under fire recently by Democrats and some Republicans in Congress for his open support for Bush's plan to increase troops levels in Iraq. He did say his candidate will not bow to pressure from the public, which has grown increasingly impatient with the war. 'You can't be there and get out at the same time,' Davis said.

TODAYonline: " Taiwan's Vice President Annette Lu announced Tuesday her bid to run for president in the 2008 elections, promising to boost prosperity and improve ties with China. . Lu is the fourth heavyweight figure from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to join the race. . 'I will fight another election battle for Taiwan and endeavour to write a new page in history,' she said. . 'Taiwan needs a good anchor to face the severe challenges under the current special circumstances.' . Vice president since 2000, Lu said the country of 23 million people had to tackle a widening gap between rich and poor, capital outflows and the military threat from China, which regards the island as part of its territory. . 'I will do my best to enhance prosperity and improve the well-being of the people,' added Lu, 63, a former human rights advocate. . She urged peaceful cooperation and co-existence between Taipei and Beijing to promote what she called 'constructive engagement.' . 'The historical fued beween the nationalists and communists should come to an end. There should be no hatred between Taiwan and China. There should be no war,' said the former human rights advocate. . The independence-leaning DPP's other declared candidates so far are former premier Frank Hsieh, chairman Yu Shyi-kun and incumbent premier Su Tseng-chang. . Cheney's Health Problems Could Upend GOP 2008 Race

: "Cheney's Health Problems Could Upend GOP 2008 Race Kevin Mooney Staff Writer (CNSNews.com) - Vice-President Dick Cheney's health problems have triggered speculation that he may be forced to step down, a move that could potentially throw the Republican 2008 presidential nomination race into disarray. Although only 66, Cheney has suffered four heart attacks in the past and has undergone angioplasty and bypass surgery. This week, he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg. Blood clots can travel to the lungs and result in a pulmonary embolism -- a sudden blockage of blood flow in an artery in the lung -- one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. In the event of the vice presidency becoming vacant through resignation or death, the Constitution requires the president to nominate a vice president who must be confirmed by majority vote of both houses of Congress. Bush would find it difficult to get a Democratic-controlled Congress to approve a conservative nominee, analysts say. At the same time, neither of the leading GOP 2008 presidential aspirants -- former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani or Sen. John McCain of Arizona -- would be eager to be seen as President Bush's heir apparent, should he tap either of them for the job. If, on the other hand, Bush were to replace Cheney with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- a move analysts consider not unlikely in the event of a vacancy -- Rice would almost certainly accept the position only if she was also prepared to run for president in 2008."

Ex-Senate leaders join bipartisan effort - Yahoo! News: "WASHINGTON - Four former Senate majority leaders are heading a new group aimed at putting aside partisan politics and offering solutions to the nation's biggest issues. The Bipartisan Policy Center, to be announced at a news conference Tuesday, will be directed by former Sens. Howard Baker, R-Tenn.; George Mitchell, D-Maine; Bob Dole, R-Kan.; and Tom Daschle, D-S.D. 'We've all been leaders and you know how difficult it is,' said Dole, who served as both majority and minority leader between 1985 and 1996. 'We're all partisan in a way,' Dole said in an interview Monday, adding they also hope to show that 'compromise is not a bad word.' Mitchell, who led the Senate from 1989 to 1995, added, 'If the four of us can reach consensus in some areas it might have a beneficial effect.'"

Clintons, Obama pay homage to activists - Yahoo! News

Clintons, Obama pay homage to activists - Yahoo! News: "By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer Sun Mar 4, 11:12 PM ET SELMA, Ala. - Presidential candidates Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) and Hillary Clinton crossed campaign paths for the first time Sunday as they paid homage to civil rights activists who they said helped give them the chance to break barriers to the White House. The two candidates and former President Clinton, making his first appearance with his wife since her campaign began, linked arms with activists who 42 years ago were attacked by police with billyclubs during a peaceful voting rights march. 'Bloody Sunday' shocked the nation and helped bring attention to the racist voting practices that kept blacks from the polls. 'I'm here because somebody marched for our freedom,' Obama, who would become the first black president, said from the Brown Chapel AME Church where the march began on March 7, 1965. 'I'm here because you all sacrificed for me. I stand on the shoulders of giants.' Not to be outdone in the hunt for black votes, Hillary Clinton also spoke in Selma at a church three blocks away and brought a secret weapon — her husband. Three days before the march anniversary, her campaign announced that the former president who is so popular among blacks would accompany her for his induction into Selma's Voting Rights Hall of Fame. Sen. Clinton said the Voting Rights Act and the Selma march made possible her presidential campaign, as well as those of Obama and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic to occupy the Oval Office."

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Mary Mitchell :: Bill Clinton is Hillary's best bet to bridging her racial divide

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Mary Mitchell :: Bill Clinton is Hillary's best bet to bridging her racial divide: "Bill Clinton is Hillary's best bet to bridging her racial divide March 4, 2007 BY MARY MITCHELL Sun-Times Columnist When Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton shows up in Selma, she won't have to talk about race. All Clinton has to do is cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge -- the infamous site of the showdown between disenfranchised voters and state troopers -- on the arm of former President Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton, who was dubbed by Toni Morrison as the 'first black president,' is still hugely popular with African Americans. His presence in Selma on Sunday is designed to stop the flow of black support to Sen. Barack Obama. A national poll initially had Hillary Clinton leading among black voters 60 percent to Obama's 20 percent. But less than one month after his official announcement, Obama has cut that lead down significantly -- 44 percent to 30 percent, according to an ABC News/ Washington Post poll released last week. But for the most part, Hillary Clinton's approach to prickly racial issues mirrors the way white people in America generally handle race. She doesn't talk about it. Few people expect her to talk about it, and unless she stumbles over a racial minefield, no one asks her to talk about it."

Bush has weak hand, especially on trade, as he heads to South America and woes follow him - U.S. Politics - BostonHerald.com: "Bush has weak hand, especially on trade, as he heads to South America and woes follow him By Associated Press Sunday, March 4, 2007 - Updated: 11:10 AM EST WASHINGTON - Second-term presidents often find comfort in foreign policy and overseas travel as they lose clout at home. A statesman-abroad strategy, however, will not work particularly well for President Bush on a six-day Latin American trip designed to signal a revitalized U.S. commitment to the region. Bush is unpopular throughout the globe, even in this country’s backyard, and will find it hard to escape the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan no matter where he goes. Bush’s trip _ to generally friendly nations _ is intended to show renewed interest in a part of the world that has felt neglected since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. "

Brains behind the bid | Chicago Tribune

Brains behind the bid Chicago Tribune: "By Kathy Bergen Tribune staff reporter Published March 4, 2007 When U.S. Olympic Committee evaluators fly in Monday to give Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics the once-over, they undoubtedly will take stock of Mayor Richard Daley and his handpicked bid leader, Patrick Ryan. They probably will rub elbows with some high-powered supporting cast members--business giants tapped to function as the team's board of directors. But, in a real sense, the evaluators will be measuring the work of a pack of behind-the-scenes specialists who have been shaping Chicago's bid. There's an astute politico, a no-nonsense venue and operations guy with a handful of previous Olympics under his belt, a sports marketing guru formerly with the USOC, and a public relations man who has assisted the International Olympic Committee in crisis moments, including the Salt Lake City bid scandal. Were it not for theses masterminds, Chicago may not have made it to this showdown against rival Los Angeles. For instance, when the USOC last summer nixed Chicago's proposal for dual lakefront stadiums, these specialists scrambled to analyze six other potential stadium sites. Chicago 'really needed that level of expertise at this stage because you're really starting, to a significant degree, from scratch,' said sports industry consultant Marc Ganis. All told, about 12 paid specialists and a wide array of executives on loan from leading professional-services firms have been shaping Chicago 2016, in partnership with City Hall. 'I take a lot of the ideas and make sure they are properly vetted,' said Ron Huberman, the mayor's chief of staff. 'My involvement is the connect-the-dots guy.'"

  • "In the future, older Americans are expected to be a larger share of the U.S. population, live longer, and spend more years in retirement than previous generations, and by 2025 labor force growth is expected to be less than a fifth of what it is today. Without major increases in productivity or immigration, low labor force growth will ultimately lead to slower economic and federal revenue growth. This in turn will accentuate the overall pressure on the federal budget, which will face increased claims for Medicare and Social Security benefits while relatively fewer workers pay into the benefits systems. Moreover, the possible loss of many experienced workers as the baby boomers retire could lead to further adverse effects. If older Americans were to remain in the labor force longer, it could ease some of the pressures on Social Security, supplement individual retirement incomes, and help finance health care."
