The Arc of DC, in conjunction with The Arc of the United States, Special Olympics, American Association of People with Disabilities, and The Disability Policy Collaboration, is organizing a public protest of the film Tropic Thunder on Wednesday, August 13 at The Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14. Tropic Thunder includes a very negative portrayal of an individual with intellectual disabilities and repeatedly uses the offensive term "retard" in a derogatory and demeaning manner. The Arc of DC needs your help in speaking out about the film and protesting negative portrayals so that individuals with intellectual disabilities will be viewed as valued members of their communities.

 

Call to Action

 

Self-advocates, family members, advocates, and concerned citizens are needed to publicly protest the film Tropic Thunder on Wednesday, August 13 at The Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14. The Arc of DC asks for individuals to protest outside the theatre at the 11:30am showing of the film as well as the showings between 5:00pm and 7:00pm. This rally will be a public display of the need for respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities and will include educational materials stating the harm of using the R-word.
