It has been an active week at Freedom Plaza with lots of challenges and opportunities.

The week began with a great speech from Cornel West that led to an impromptu march to the U.S. Supreme Court, where the Freedom Plaza occupiers held signs on the Supreme Court steps urging an end to corporate personhood, claiming money is not speech and seeking human needs not corporate greed.  It is illegal to hold signs on the Supreme Court steps – that's right with a Constitution that says "Congress shall make no law abridging" our Freedom of Speech, you can't hold a sign on the Supreme Court steps.  Nineteen people were arrested, including Dr. West, and in an unusual move they were all held overnight in the DC lock-up.Video here.  The next day they dropped the charges, so they were essentially punished for exercising their Freedom of Speech and not given a trial.

Thursday and Friday, Freedom Plaza had actions where we shut down Citibank.  See article and video here and here.  After they reported their 7thconsecutive quarter of immense profits and they made a deal with the SEC where they paid a $280 million dollar fine for profiting $1 billion in sales of corrupt mortgage derivatives. With that lack of accountability where Citibank profits over $700 million after paying the fine, they are sure to be a repeat offender.

The challenges we face are large.  The Park Police are regularly coming by to videotape our activities.  We have been told they are building a case to evict us.  While we have a permit, the tents, sleeping out and some of the food services violate the permit.  We believe our permit is the First Amendment which says we have the Freedom to Assemble to redress grievances.  That is exactly what we are doing and we are having an impact on the political debate.   We wanted to alert you to this because we will need support if the police come to remove us.

Please join us Saturday at 12 noon for a visit by Jim Hightower and Sunday at 4 pm for a teach-in by members of the April 6 Revolutionary Movement of Egypt. The evening discussions on Saturday and Sunday are Education and the Environment. There will be a teach-in by Free My City, an educational group in DC, at 5 pm on Saturday. On Monday, we have an action planned regarding Housing. Not only are there record foreclosures in the US, but now legislation has been introduced providing automatic visas to people from other countries who can buy at least $500,000 worth of real estate. We need you to make it a success. Please join us Monday at 9 am on Freedom Plaza for a march to the action.

Thanks for all your support.  We are working hard to turn this country around.  We all know how off track it is and that only the people united, in solidarity, can shift power to the people and end corporate rule.

We are asking you to show solidarity for Occupy Wall Street
Tomorrow Morning at 6:00 AM, Friday, October 14.

Mayor Bloomberg has threatened to shut down Occupy Wall Street.

EMERGENCY ACTION IS NEEDED! We urge everyone who can to join them on Liberty Plaza in New York City tomorrow early in the morning as the attack on the occupiers is scheduled to begin at 7 AM.

The Occupy Movement has taken off across the country as Americans step up to challenge the unfairness of the U.S. economy.

Americans are finding their political voices after corporate power has shut them out of politics.

Do not let Mayor Bloomberg shut down this public discourse. Take action to stop Brookfield Properties from prohibiting sleeping in Zuccotti Park. Stand in unity with Occupy Wall Street.

The October2011.org Movement has some of its core organizers going to Wall Street to help defend them against the billionaire mayor’s attack.

If you cannot be in New York we urge you to call Mayor Bloomberg and express your outrage at undermining constitutionally protected rights to Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assemby. Call 212-New-York. If you are in New York City call 311. Or you can occupy a local Brookfield Property.

Dear Friends,

One of the beautiful aspects of the occupation is that it has brought people out into the open to talk about the issues. Everywhere we look right now as we gaze out at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC, people are engaged in conversations. Some are standing in groups, and some are sitting in circles in the assembly area or between the tents.

Throughout the day, people wander through Freedom Plaza to read the signs scattered about "Human Needs not Corporate Greed," "We are the 99% and so are you," and " Money for people, not for wars."

This is the first step in this evolution to a more peaceful, just and sustainable planet. For too long we have been focused on divisions. Now we are finding what unites us.

Increasing numbers of people are becoming unemployed, uninsured, losing their homes or pensions or dignity. Students are dropping out of college due to cost or graduating with lifelong debt in a deteriorating job market. The days of sitting in silence and blaming ourselves for not working hard enough are over.

The first step in the process of change is awareness of the problem. We are encouraging all people to come out of their homes. Join us in the streets either through your local occupation or on the local playground. Talk to those around you. Talk about the way things are with increasing wealth disparity and poverty. Talk about the way you want things to be - a society based on openness, acceptance, honesty, transparency and kindness.

We invite you to join us in Freedom Plaza each evening during the General Assembly. It begins at 6:00 pm eastern time. You can join us in person or via livestream on the website. We are going to devote a portion of each meeting to a discussion of one of the fifteen issues and the solutions we would like to see.

The schedule is below. Join us, talk about it and share what you learn with your family, friends and colleagues. This is the first step in the nonviolent transformation of our country.

I knew that when my father left the White House 10 years ago, he was not going to stop working to give people the opportunities, health, and tools necessary to live a better life.

His vision of a more equal and prosperous world motivated his decision to run for his first public office (and all thereafter). It is that same force that motivates his work with the Clinton Foundation today.

As we celebrate 10 years of my father's foundation this year, we're looking to the future, and asking friends and allies to be part of creating that future.

Please share your thoughts on what challenges you think the Clinton Foundation should tackle in the next 10 years -- and please let my father know that you will stand with him in this work.

I recently had the honor of attending the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) -- an annual meeting he organizes to inspire, connect, and empower a community of global leaders to forge solutions to the world's most pressing challenges.

The experience was invigorating, but it is the action that comes out of these meetings that is truly inspiring. Since the first meeting in 2005, members have made more than 2,000 commitments, which have already improved the lives of 300 million people in more than 180 countries.

That same commitment to meaningful and sustainable results can be seen in the remarkable work of the Clinton Foundation over the past decade -- transforming lives by giving people across the globe the tools they need to create better lives for themselves and their communities:

-- 4 million people in 70 countries are benefiting from lifesaving HIV/AIDS treatments at reduced prices;
-- 26,000 entrepreneurs, small business owners, and smallholder farmers are improving their families' livelihoods and their communities;
-- 30 million kids in the United States and Latin America are receiving more nutritious meals in schools; and
-- 4.5 million trees have been planted in Malawi and Rwanda, benefiting over 8,000 farmers.

I am very proud of the incredible work my father's foundation does -- every day, all year long, in every corner of the globe -- to change the course of people's lives for the better.

He inspires so many of us; he inspires me every day. So, let's give a little inspiration back as he embarks on his next 10 years of service to our global community.

Another year has come to a close. And I am proud of the work that Rock the Vote accomplished with the support of all of you - whether that was as a volunteer, a financial contributor, or as a voter.

Today, I am writing to ask you to support Rock the Vote with a tax-deductible contribution.

As you know, Rock the Vote works to make sure that young people have the tools they need to register, vote, and have a say in the direction of this country and their own lives. From voter registration drives online and on the ground, videos and concerts to raise awareness, voter education through voter guides and online resources, to high school civic education programs - we work hard to engage and empower young people in our democracy.

And where we work, voter engagement goes up. In 2010, we registered a record-breaking 300,000 voters and increased turnout in key precinct that we worked in. We need your support to work in more places.

Hundreds of artists and musicians lend their voices to our cause, media outlets and partners generously distribute our message, but our funding comes from people like you.

We’re a non-profit with a small staff that happens to have a broad reach and a big voice. We make great things happen with our modest budget, but we need your help.

With the first contest of the 2012 election coming in one year, there’s a ton of preparation for everything we have planned. You remember how much went down in 2008? We’re going bigger, with your support.

Here are a few ways your contribution can help:

$15 brings a Democracy Class video and teaching packet to another high school, engaging students in how to participate our country's democracy
$25 sends a 'street team kit' to another volunteer who wants to run a voter registration drive in their school or community
$100 allows us to reach 10 more voters online that weren't thinking about voting
$25,000 allows us to build new technology to facilitate easier voter registration online
$200,000 allows us to staff up a major city with a voter registration, education and turnout campaign
$1,000,000 allows us to produce ads and run them online to give young people something to believe in and a reason to turn out
$30,000,000 and we register the ~18 million people who have turned 18 since the last election and give this country something they have never seen - a youth political movement that changes how politics runs for the better

We think big. RTV has run the largest non-partisan voter registration drives on record for the past couple election cycles. We grow better and more effective every year. Help us keep it going!

I'm lucky that I have good health insurance and can go to a doctor if anything happens. Unfortunately, a lot of young people don't and they get screwed by a broken system.

Crisis in Iran.

Dear Friends,

Young Iranians have taken to the streets to make their voices heard. Stand with them in their fight for basic human rights.

This week, voters in Iran led an uprising at the polls, but vote suppression and fraud has cast the results into serious doubt. And now people are dying in the streets and in university dorms to have their votes counted.

Sign our statement of support in solidarity with the Iranian people who want free and fair elections.

"I stand with young people in Iran and across the world in support of free and fair elections and against voter suppression and censorship."

Last November, we were free to dance in the streets or stew at a bar. We could text our friends and update our Facebook status. We could get uncensored news online and on TV. It was a free and fair election. Votes were counted and our country had a peaceful transition of power. Right now it's the opposite in Iran, there is no free flow of information - text messaging is turned off, Facebook is disabled, journalists are being told they risk dangerous consequences for filming the protests. This is nothing less than a fight for democracy and basic human rights.

Our generation is leading a young voter revolution at home and abroad, and we will not let oppression get in our way. Show your support for the young voters in Iran.

Go to our website sign our statement of support and then upload your message to young Iranians through videos, pictures and text.

You can also get an image of support to post on your Facebook and Twitter profile pictures. (At Rock the Vote, we've already changed ours.)

We will compile your messages and get them to young people in Iran. (Trust us. We know people.)

As we busily prepare for our I Am DC Advocacy Day and our Champions of Democracy Awards Dinner, every extra hand will help! Please see the opportunities below and RSVP today.

1) Help enter data into our system. We have hundreds of signatures from being out and about at community events this month. No prior knowledge is needed - we will train you on everything you need to know. Shifts this week are on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 AM - noon and 1:30 - 4:30 PM at our office, 2000 P Street, NW, Suite 200.

2) Call DC Vote supporters to invite them to 2009 Champions of Democracy. We will be calling our supporters to ensure they received the invitation and encourage them to respond. Please join us for a calling party at our office. Training and a pizza dinner will be provided - no prior experience is needed. The calling party will take place on Thursday, October 1 from 5:30 - 8:00 PM.

Back in Tennessee there's an old saying: When you have the facts on your side, argue the facts. When you have the law on your side, argue the law. When you have neither, holler.

That pretty much defines the Republican opposition to President Obama's agenda for change - a whole lot of hollering to obscure their real goal, which is to prevent him and Congress from achieving important gains like climate change legislation and health care reform.

We must resist these attempts to destroy our hopes for real change with the same passion that elected President Obama. I remember all too well how this same strategy to deliberately obstruct President Clinton's agenda led to the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994.

We cannot afford to let that happen in 2010. And that's why I'm imploring you to stand with President Obama and our Democrats in Congress at this critical time before our deadline MIDNIGHT tomorrow.

Family Structure Affects Care of Disabled Elderly Parents

Since the 1970s there have been profound changes in family structure in the United States that have the potential to alter the care received by disabled elderly parents from their children, according to a study by Barbara Steinberg Schone, Ph.D., of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and colleagues. They used data from the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old survey to estimate the joint probabilities that an adult child provides time and/or cash transfers to a parent.

The estimates suggest significant detrimental effects of parental divorce and step relationships on support of disabled elderly parents. Children with parents who remarried were less likely to provide cash transfers and more likely to have a parent who was in a nursing home. For example, children were significantly less likely to provide care to their disabled parent if the parent was divorced versus widowed. Children of divorced parents were about half as likely as children of widowed parents to co-reside with a parent and their parents were more likely to live alone or in a nursing home.

Biological children with no siblings were four times more likely than single stepchildren to provide time (26 vs. 7.7 percent) or cash (13.5 vs. 2.9 percent) to their disabled parents. Also, stepchildren were significantly less likely than biological children to co-reside with the parent (1.8 vs. 7.9 percent) and more likely to have a parent living alone or in a nursing home (63.6 vs. 60.6 percent and 10.6 vs. 7.5 percent, respectively). Children in traditional nuclear families were significantly more likely to provide cash and time transfers than children in blended families (with stepchildren). Similarly, children of parents in blended families were less likely to co-reside with the parent and slightly more likely to have their parent live with other relatives or nonrelatives than children in traditional nuclear families, suggesting that the sibling network also matters.

Call 'em out: John Boehner

As the Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner could use his important position to forge honest consensus around reforms that most Americans overwhelmingly support. Sadly, Boehner is choosing to be a leading peddler of health reform lies instead.

When Boehner repeated his claim that reform would result in a government takeover of health care, it was clear he's been too busy trying to score political points to read the overwhelming evidence -- including a post from the non-partisan FactCheck.org -- debunking this claim.

And cruelly scaring seniors with lies about benefit cuts, even though his own party voted to gut Medicare? On his side of the aisle, that's become standard operating procedure.

Then of course there's Boehner's blatant lie that reform will provide taxpayer-funded abortions, a claim rejected even by groups that oppose abortion. His lies have been thoroughly debunked, but John Boehner just won't stop -- so we're calling him out.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), Department of Special Education will hold two public hearings to discuss a proposed regulation governing early intervention services for children from birth through two (2) years of age referred to as "Part C Early Intervention Services;" and a proposed policy with regard to the identity of children in the District of Columbia who may be eligible for early intervention services or special education services, referred to as a "Comprehensive Child Find Policy." The OSSE, as the lead agency for early intervention services, is responsible for a statewide system of coordinated, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, interagency programming that provides appropriate early intervention services to all infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. Additionally, the OSSE is required to ensure that children within the District of Columbia from birth through 21 suspected of needing early intervention or special education and related services are identified, located, and referred for evaluation in a timely manner.

1. Part C Early Intervention Services, Title 5, Chapter A32 (posted for public comment on Friday, September 18, 2009 and closes on Monday, October 19, 2009):

The purpose of the District of Columbia's Part C regulations being proposed in conformance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 20 U.S.C. §1400 et seq. (IDEA) is to establish standards for the operation of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Department of Special Education, DC Early Intervention Program (Program), including family eligibility and cost participation for early intervention services based upon the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

2. Comprehensive Child Find Policy (posted on the OSSE website):

Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening, and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and refer all children with disabilities as early as possible. Child Find targets children ages birth through 2.8 years old in need of early intervention services (Part C); children ages 2.8 through 21 in need of special education and related services (Part B); and their families under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 20 U.S.C. §1400, et seq. (IDEA). Children must meet eligibility criteria according to the IDEA and state guidelines to receive services. The IDEA requires all states and the District of Columbia to have a "comprehensive Child Find system" to assure that all children who are in need of early intervention or special education services are located, identified and referred.

3. Early Childhood Transition Policy (posted on the OSSE website):

The OSSE must have policies and procedures in effect to ensure that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) participate in the collaborative process required to transition eligible children from Part C early intervention services to Part B special education preschool or other programs with appropriate services. This proposed policy serves to clarify what is required of all LEAs regarding early childhood transition requirements as required in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 and its implementing federal regulations.

4. Secondary Transition Policy (posted on the OSSE website):

The IDEA and DCMR clearly identify the roles and responsibilities of all LEAs to adequately prepare students with disabilities for postsecondary education, vocational education, integrated employment (including supported employment), continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living, or community participation upon graduating or exiting high school. Furthermore, IDEA requires all LEAs to have in effect, by the student's 16th birthday, or younger if determined appropriate by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team, a coordinated set of activities that is results-oriented and focuses on improving the academic and functional achievement of the student. This proposed policy serves to clarify what is required of all LEA) in order to ensure that the District of Columbia has in place secondary transition policies and procedures as required by the IDE) 2004, its implementing federal regulations, and Title 5, Chapter 30 of the DCMR.

5. State Complaints Policy (posted on the OSSE website):

The State Complaint Office (SCO) of the OSSE will investigate and resolve complaints that allege a violation of Part B of IDEA or the District of Columbia's laws and policies regarding special education. The IDEA, 34 CFR § 303.510 through § 303.512 also require the lead agency for Part C of the IDEA to adopt written procedures for resolving any complaint that alleges a violation of Part C of the IDEA by a public agency or private service provider. The OSSE is the lead agency for Part C in the District of Columbia. This proposed policy and procedures is intended to govern complaints alleging violations of both Part B and Part C of the IDEA, unless indicated otherwise.

Persons wishing to review these proposals may access them on the OSSE webpage at www.osse.dc.gov under the special education program link on September 15, 2009. The proposed Part C Early Intervention Services regulations will also be published for comment in the District of Columbia Register (DCR) as noted. A couple weeks ago, our Executive Director, Scott Arceneaux, updated you on how far we've come in 9 months. In case you missed it, the bottom line is: we are united and thanks to you, we are on the right track to make history again in 2010. I know we are ready for this historic opportunity to change Florida in 2010 by electing Alex Sink as our next governor, sending another strong Democrat to the U.S. Senate, and electing Democrats to Florida's Cabinet, Congress, and the Legislature.

But faced with the same historic election, the Republican Party of Florida has found itself buried in scandal. Republican grassroots activists are calling for change in the party leadership. Millions of our children are being labeled with false and stigmatizing psychiatric diagnoses. Then their brains are being blunted and disabled by psychiatric drugs.

In less than two weeks, you can attend the annual meeting of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology (www.icspp.org) at the Renaissance Syracuse Hotel. The two-day conference takes place on Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, 2009 in Syracuse, New York. It features international experts on the adverse of effects of psychiatric drugs and better ways of helping children and families.

The public is welcome. For the sake of our children, please attend.

This year's conference comes at a tragic turning point in the psychiatric abuse of children. In the past, the main threat has come from the widespread use of stimulant drugs like Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, Focalin, and Concerta for children labeled with ADHD. These drugs work by crushing spontaneous behavior. Frequently this leads to depression, as well as insomnia, anxiety and psychosis. The stimulants suppress the growth of children, cause abnormalities in their brains, induce sudden cardiac death, and predispose children to cocaine abuse in young adulthood.

As bad as this is, the situation of our children has recently become even more desperate. In the past year, the FDA has unleashed a crisis of epidemic proportions by approving lobotomizing antipsychotic drugs for the control of behavior in children. Diabetes. Pancreatitis. Pathological obesity. The abnormal growth of breast tissue and even lactation in young boys and girls. Heart disease. Permanently disfiguring tics and other abnormal movements (tardive dyskinesia). Agonizing muscle spasms that also defy treatment and last indefinitely (tardive dystonia). These are a few of the drastic disorders caused by antipsychotic drugs such as Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Geodon, and Invega.

The antipsychotic drugs work by flattening the emotions and causing docility, so that the children no longer make trouble, at least for a while. With their frontal lobe function suppressed, the kids become more robotic in their behavior, and their mental and emotional growth is stunted. Often these drugs will turn them into lifelong mental patients whose enslaved brains will continue to deteriorate under toxic assault.

Great speakers and workshop presenters will cover these and many other subjects about psychiatry and about how to help children and families in distress with caring and effective psychological, education, and social approaches.

Stephen A. Sheller is one of the lead attorneys in two of the largest billion-dollar settlements ever made as a result of civil and criminal actions brought by the federal government against drug companies Pfizer and Eli Lilly. Both legal actions involved psychiatric drugs. I will be honored to introduce attorney Sheller at the conference.

As the Founder Emeritus of ICSPP (I've passed the mantle onto younger professionals), I will be making two presentations, one on how to inspire the psychiatric reform movement and another on better approaches to helping children and families.

Attorney James Gottstein from Alaska is the world's most active civil rights attorney on behalf of psychiatrically abused children and adults.

Graham Dukes, a physician and a lawyer, is a leading expert on international drug regulation.

AHRQ Issues Funding Opportunity Announcement (R18) for Comparative Effectiveness Research

Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to inform you about a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued on September 25 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). RFA-HS-10-004, Innovative Adaption and Dissemination of AHRQ Comparative Effectiveness Research Products (iADAPT) (R18) is supported by $29.5 million in funds provided to AHRQ under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The FOA invites grant applications for new projects to extend the reach and impact of Comparative Effectiveness Research Reviews and associated products, particularly Comparative Effectiveness Research Summary Guides, which are prepared by the John M. Eisenberg Clinical Decisions and Communications Science Center, part of the AHRQ Effective Health Care Program. AHRQ seeks innovative efforts to adapt the content and/or delivery mechanism of one or more of its current or forthcoming comparative effectiveness research products, particularly summary guides. Adaptations should aim to increase the impact and effective use of one or more comparative effectiveness research products by developing, implementing, and evaluating product adaptations that target three important audiences: stakeholders, systems, and settings. The adaptations may involve customizing the original comparative effectiveness research contents to a specialized clinical audience of potential users or translating the Comparative Effectiveness Research Summary Guides for underserved patient and consumer populations who have limited access to medication information on the Internet. These consumers and patients are more likely to get health care information and advice provided through traditional means, such as neighborhood, community, or faith-based groups. Adaptations may address the presentation of the content and/or mechanisms by which the contents are delivered or used.

AHRQ anticipates making 20 to 25 awards that together total $29.5 million, contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Because the proposed research will vary across applications, it is anticipated that each award's size and duration will vary. Applications may be up to 3 years in duration, with a total budget not to exceed $1.5 million over the 3 years. While total annual costs may vary over the period of the award, the maximum cost in any one year cannot exceed $1 million. Funding beyond the first year will be contingent upon the Agency's acceptance of the annual progress report. Applications are due on December 16, 2009.

SAMHSA Announces 2009 Science and Service Award Winners

SAMHSA has selected 27 organizations to receive the Agency's 2009 Science and Service Awards. These awards recognize exemplary implementation of evidence-based interventions that have been shown to prevent and/or treat mental illnesses and substance abuse.

Now in its third year, this annual award program recognizes public- and private-sector organizations, as well as community-based coalitions, that have worked to improve their communities and the lives of individuals by providing the best services possible.

"Families and individuals deserve the most effective services possible for the prevention and treatment of health conditions, including mental health and substance use disorders," said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S, M.P.H. "These award winners have demonstrated that they are delivering such services in their communities."

Awardees were chosen in each of five categories: substance abuse prevention, treatment of substance abuse and recovery support services, mental health promotion, treatment of mental illness and recovery support services, and co-occurring disorders.

Roll Call: "Czarism"

...the president should answer a thoughtful letter written to him Sept. 14 by Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) and five other GOP Senators, which stipulated that not every post referred to in the media as a "czar" numbering as many as 34 is problematic.

But, the letter said, at least 18 new positions created by the administration "may be undermining the constitutional oversight responsibilities of Congress or express statutory assignments of responsibility to other executive branch officials."

Among the posts on the Senators' list, which was not included in the letter, are White House "czars" for energy and environmental policy, health care reform, urban affairs and cybersecurity, plus others in various departments who oversee Afghanistan policy, autos, manufacturing and financial industry pay. None are subject to Senate confirmation.

Senator Collins accepts award for support of drug courts

Senator Susan Collins was honored with the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) 2009 Congressional Leadership Award for her outstanding support of Drug Courts in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 Appropriations process. The Senators critical support helped Drug Courts receive a record 250% increase over the previous years funding, an amount totaling $63.882 million.

"Drug Courts have proven to be one of our nation's most successful strategies for dealing with addicted offenders," said Maine's Chief Justice Leigh I. Saufley. "Drug Courts are truly making a difference for individuals who, without Drug Court, would not have the opportunity to restore their lives, reunite with their families and become productive citizens. Senator Collins' Congressional leadership has made a real difference in the lives of countless people around the country and in our home state of Maine."

Senator Collins recently met with members of the STS-127 space shuttle crew,including Chris Cassidy (Mission Specialist, from York, Maine), Tom Marshburn (Mission Specialist), and Mission Commander Mark Polansky.

Senators Snowe, Collins announce more than $4 million for Bangor International Airport, Knox County Regional Airport

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a combined $4.21 million in grant funding to the Bangor International Airport and the Knox County Regional Airport in Owl's Head.

Specifically, $2.43 million in funding will go to the Bangor International Airport. The funding will be used for continued work (Phase II) of the airport's cargo apron parking rehabilitation project. The Knox County Regional Airport will also receive $1.78 million to assist in the construction of a new terminal building.

"Maine's transportation infrastructure must be maintained and improved in order to keep residents connected to people and economies all over the world," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "This federal funding will help the Bangor International Airport and Knox County Regional Airport fulfill the transportation needs of Maine by enhancing and updating the airports' facilities."

The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to improve safety, increase mobility in support of the nation's economy, protect human and natural environment, achieve organizational excellence, and support the national security strategy.

Fortunately, there are "angels" among us, caring and generous people who open their homes and their hearts to these children through adoption. A remarkable couple from Cape Elizabeth will be honored in Washington, D.C., along with angels from every other state, for their commitment to children in need.

The truth is Americans agree on the principles of reform and there's too much at stake to let Congress fail.

If you read the news, you've probably heard that no one in Washington can agree on anything when it comes to health care reform.

But the truth is most Americans agree on the principles behind reform. The Divided We Fail coalition is living proof.

Phillip, if business interests can work with labor unions and advocates for older Americans to find common ground on health care, why can't Congress?

It's time to remind Congress that there's too much at stake to let reform fail.

So what's keeping our diverse coalition at the table? Just take a look at the statistics.

Without reform, the Medicare Trust Fund will be in the red within the next 10 years.
Without reform, health care costs for employers will rise 166% in the next decade alone.
Without reform, 14,000 people a day will continue to lose their health insurance and be one major illness away from bankruptcy.

Our coalition is still at the table because the price of failure is unacceptable. If we don't make comprehensive reforms to health care now, then when? That's why we're in this fight for meaningful reform until legislation lands on the president's desk.

"We have not been clear about what our goal is in Afghanistan and what our exit strategy is. The alternatives are not simply to pull out tomorrow or put in tens of thousands of more troops." Dairy Crisis The Justice Department antitrust chief testified at a hearing in Vermont about reports that Dean Foods dominates 70 percent of the New England milk market. Meanwhile, National Farmers Union members came to Capitol Hill to back Bernie's Senate-passed bill to provide an extra $350 million for struggling dairy farmers. Campaign Finance Conservative Supreme Court justices may overturn curbs on corporations that pour millions of dollars into attempts to influence elections. If that happens, Bernie told CNN's Rick Sanchez, "You're just giving over our democracy to the wealthiest and most powerful institutions in the world. Surveillance Bernie cosponsored Russ Feingold's bill to rescind the immunity given to telecommunications firms that took part in a Bush-era spying program. Social Security Retirees would get a $250 one-time payment next year under a Sanders bill to make up for the lack of a cost-of-living adjustment. "We are in the midst of a major recession and we cannot forget about the serious economic stress that older Americans are living under," he said. Health Care "The American people should have a choice about whether they want to stay with their private insurance or go to a public plan, a Medicare-type plan," Bernie said on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. "If you don't have a public option in competition with the private insurance companies, what is going to stop them from raising their rates higher and higher and higher?"

Pentagon Waste Overhauling the way civilian contractors hurt in war zones are cared for could save $250 million a year, a study found. "The current system for providing health insurance and workers compensation for our military contact workers in Iraq and Afghanistan is broken and wasting millions of dollars in payments to companies like AIG," Bernie said. We are eagerly anticipating our 2009 Champions of Democracy Award Dinner on Tuesday, October 13. Each year, our silent auction features exciting packages and prizes that generate critical funding for DC Vote's work.

Can you or someone you know donate an item to our 'Let Washington Speak' Silent Auction? Interested, but not sure what you can offer? Here are a few successful items from past events:

In Memory of the 44,000 Dead

Single Payer Action will be co-sponsoring a memorial on the National Mall for the 44,000 Americans who die every year from lack of health insurance.

We will be planting one American flag for every ten Americans who have died so far this year from lack of health insurance.

That's more than 3,000 flags.

We'll be setting up the Flag Memorial on the Mall near the National Monument at 15th St. and Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

The memorial will be up from later today -- Sunday the 20th -- to 6 pm on Sunday the 27th.

[PsychRights] Oppose FDA Declaration of Electroshock Safety

The FDA Wants to Declare Electroshock Machines Safe Without a Safety Investigation. TELL THEM NO!

     The Food and Drug Administration is in charge of regulating medical devices just as it does drugs, including the machines used to give Electroshock. But it's not doing its job. It has allowed these machines to be used on millions of patients over the past generation without requiring any evidence whatsoever that shock treatment is safe or effective! This is so even though shock machines are Class III---high risk---devices, which by law are supposed to be investigated by clinical trials as thoroughly as new drugs and devices just coming onto the market. But because of intense lobbying by the American Psychiatric Association---which claims the devices are safe but opposes an investigation---the FDA has disregarded its own law. (For the full story of how shock survivors have fought for a scientific safety investigation of Electroshock for the past 25 years, see Linda Andre's terrific new book, Doctors of Deception: What They Don't Want You to Know About Shock Treatment.)

      In April 2009---20 years after it first ruled the devices high-risk and named brain damage and memory loss as risks of the treatment---the FDA belatedly announced it would call on the manufacturers of the devices to provide evidence of safety and efficacy. The deadline for submissions has passed, but the manufacturers have not conducted any clinical trials, claiming they cannot afford them. They simply point to the opinions of shock doctors (including those who have financial interests in companies making Electroshock machines) as evidence that shock is safe.

      The FDA is now supposed to require Electroshock machines to undergo the rigorous PreMarket Approval process (PMA) that is required of new devices, including clinical safety trials. These machines, technically known as "devices," are referred to as Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT), but I don't like to use this euphemistic term for running electricity through people's brains. The FDA could have called for this investigation any time in the past 30 years but has previously failed to do so. There is great risk the FDA will downclassify it to the low-risk Class II, without scientific evidence of its safety. As a Class II device, Electroshock machines would never have to go through the PMA process. The amount of damage that electroshock has been allowed to inflict is an outrage. We now finally have a chance to at least register our opposition because the FDA has opened up a new docket for public comment on electroshock machines. It is important for as many people as possible to write in with their opposition. Comments will be accepted up through January 2010.

    If you have personal knowledge or expertise about Electroshock, writing about that can be good. Or you can pull information from various sources. Linda Andre's book, Doctors of Deception is a gold mine of information. Leonard Roy Frank issued the Electroshock Quotationary, in June 2006, which is a good source of material, and there is also a brand new web page of historical materials from Leonard at http://psychiatrized.org/LeonardRoyFrank/FromTheFilesOfLeonardRoyFrank.htm   Also, PsychRights has quite a large collection of materials at http://psychrights.org/Research/Digest/Electroshock/electroshock.htm from which comments can be drawn.
